My company is using MS SharePoint to essentially run internal portals that are managed by the user group. SharePoint allows for versioning of documents, access controls managed by administrators of the SharePoint administrators assigned to the particular SharePoint portal (not to be confused with network/server administrators), access controls (read, read/write, and administrator), and typical portal features (message of the day, images, etc...). The software is also integrated with the rest of Microsoft Office so you can edit say a project schedule and saves will go to the SharePoint site (along with all the versioning control).

All said though, I don't necessarily like the software. It doesn't work well with non-Microsoft products or for users not on Microsoft operating systems. When used by non-Microsoft applications, the interface can be a bit of a pain to work with.
