Since it has been proven that our brains react to different colors or the lack thereof, wouldn't only using CFL's be harmful?

It is true that they do not. That is why photos taken under flourescent light appear green. Incandescent bulbs DO emit a full spectrum, though they emit much more in the red end of the scale than in the blue. "Full spectrum" cfls don't really emit the full spectrum either, though they are better than traditional flourescents.

Neither do normal light bulbs. And you can get full spectrum CFL's, just like normal ones.

"You can find many fluorescent and compact fluorescent products that match the same color as incandescent. Look for light bulbs that say "Warm White" or "Soft White." These have a Color Rendering Index (CRI) above 70. Warm light is between 70 and mid 80 CRI. Also note that the higher the CRI, the ‘cooler’ the light feels and the bluer the effect. Fluorescents can also provide light similar to outdoors or daylight. The fluorescent bulbs should have a high CRI, which determines color accuracy, and a high Kelvin temperature (color of light) that replicates natural sunlight at high noon. A bulb like this would have ratings of: 82 CRI or more (daylight is 100) and a Kelvin of 5500 or more (daylight is 6000). These bulbs are sometimes referred to as natural or full spectrum."

The spectrum of CFL's is a property of the manufacturer. Different manufactures CFL will have a different spectrum.

In contrast the normal incandescent light bulb emits are far wider spectrum. This can easily be investigated using a spectrometer and a Young's slits set up.

incandescent bulbs emit the warmer side of the spectrum- on the red side, and are 40% effecient, or make 60% heat.

fluorescent do emit a spectrum on the cooler end, nearer violet.

sunlight contains a full spectrum.
You see the difference as you go from an office into sunlight or into a store illuminated by fluorescent . Makeup mirrors long ago developed a series of lighting that showed makeup in different lights.

Very few lights emit the full spectrum of light, at least one that resembles the sun. The closest is halogen or metal halide, and those suckers gobble lots of watts doing so.

You are right that many do not emit the full spectrum of light but there are new ones out that advertise that they do emit the full spectrum.
