I used to be like that... fearful of letting people borrow things from me. Now, I just accept the fact that when I loan something to someone, it may not come back. If it is just once or twice, I have no problem with that. But if this person has a track record of doing this, then I will reevaluate our friendship. I don't like freeloaders, and fully expect that over a lifetime of friendship, it should balance out fairly closely. Not exactly.
I guess this is easier for me to say today, when I have money, than it was years ago, when I didn't have as much. But I suspect that even without, I would still be the same way. Material things, or "stuff" just isn't as important to me anymore. To me, people are the ones that matter.
Sorry that was a "windy" answer, but you get the idea I hope.

If she asks again, tell her "no". This way you won't lose anything that belongs to you and there will be no reason to debate on what happened. And yes, I DO hate that when someone doesn't return something or it comes back broken. I don't let anyone borrow anything that belongs to me unless it's something I don't care about. I let my neighbor borrow my staple gun to hang things in her home and she never gave it back. I didn't care about the staple gun so it was no big deal. If you do let your friend borrow something in the future, make sure it's something you don't care a lot about. Or, just don't let her borrow anything at all. I hope this helps

It's very annoying indeed! However it may be a genuine mistake, she may truly believe she has returned it. What if you ask her again in a few days? Give her the benefit of the doubt, tell her you would like to believe you were mistaken but you looked everywhere for the item and you really couldn't find it; could she please look again at her place? That's a reasonable request to make.

Then, indeed, next time don't let her borrow anything again, or be more assertive in the first place so you can ask it back soon after, when she hasn't misplaced it yet.

If you lend something to someone, you need to be prepared for things like this. Before asking someone, ask yourself if it is worth losing a friendship if you don't get it back? You can also set a time deadline: "okay, but I need it back in a week". Some friends are just like that and you have to be prepared for that when making a decision on whether or not to let them borrow the requested item.

It is a real problem, I've lost many books that way.
The only advise I can give you is, in the interest of staying "neighborly", or close to friends or family, let them know that whatever they borrow, needs to be returned by the end of the day, or by the end of the following day, depending on what is borrowed. Tell them that you need what ever it is at that time, so you absolutely need it back.
Good luck.

why should i be embarrassed to ask for my rights. i constantly remind them of my belongings. so should you. you lend something and at the end you get upset moreover you sacrifice it. obviously you can not get over it and have loads of stress additionally. they will think you are stingy and difficult to get on with but you will have what is yours.
