In what war did America experience direct military attack upon its own territory?

when you say territory you really open this question to a vast amount of answers.

a territory does not have to be a state of the US. It doesn't have to be on the mainland, within the 48 continuous states. a territory is just a place within the sphere of US interests, that in trusts its defense to US protection, has a Territorial government, but doesn't allow its inhabitants to vote, or for that matter pay taxes to the central government.

If you are looking for Territory's, then the Philippines, and Guam, during WWII, (just an example) which were once part of the Spanish empire, come under this sphere of thinking. So does Hawaii, and Alaska.

You might want to revise the question

The Revolutionary War, The War of 1812, The Civil War, and WWII of course. I suppose you could throw in the War on Terror as well because of 911. In the war of 1812, the first White House was burnt to the ground. During WWII, Pearl Harbor was attacked, one of the Aleutian Islands was occupied, and even where I live in Oregon, a few shells landed on our shore.

You need to qualify your question better. People are trying to answer the question, figuring your talking about actual US states. American "territory" is a flag ship or US plane. All the answers are right. Thomas Jefferson had to deal with Muslims off the African coast way back when.

The war of 1812. It's the only time I believe that foreign troops ever fought on US Soil. During the Revolutionary war, the US didn't technically exist yet.

During World War II Japan launched an estimated 9000 anti-personnel "balloon bombs". Japan launched these into the jet stream hoping they would fall on the US. And estimated 1000 of them did hit the US with only 300 being observed. Of those, one was successful in that it killed six people.
