You don't have enough troops to do it, and the only way to get them would be a draft. If you think there is anti-war sentiment now in US, try that.
And, even if you did have the amount of troops needed, the political will is not there, and rightly so, to do such a thing.
So, you can:
1) stay in Iraq for years and fight a low-grade war
2) leave and Iraq will disintegrate into civil war
3) leave, but put a strongman back in charge.
Seems to me 3 is the 'best' choice. Is too bad your idiot of a president had not foreseen the results of his arrogant actions.

The press is not at fault for our debacle in Iraq. The people of the United States are fully culpable for allowing the US military to invade, occupy, and murder thousands of Iraqis who never comitted a single act of aggression against the US. The US is losing the war in Iraq because, unlike the Iraqis, we have neither a cause nor a will to win. The Generals and Admirals, for the most part, are political stooges, and lack character, ability, moral courage, and the leadership necessary to fight this unjust war. Iraq is Vietnam all over again. Our troops hands are not tied. They simply cannot fathom the essence of insurgent warfare. Our military is a high-tech, shock-and-awe military, designed for high intensity, short-duration warfare. We can never defeat an enemy engaged in assymetrical warfare. We didn't do it in Vietnam and we will not do it in Iraq. I blame our so-called military leaders for our defeat, because most of them did not have the courage to challenge George Bush, Dick Cheney, and the neo-con chicken-hawks who got us into this quagmire. We must apologize to the Iraqi people, pay billions of dollars in restitution for murdering their people and devastating their country, and withdraw our ocuupational forces in a methodical manner. If the US truly wants peace and security in the Middle-East then we must address the Palestinian issue and cut off all aid to Israel, disarm Israel, and restore Palestine to the Palestinians.

Never in the history of man has anyone EVER been asked to fight a "PC" war. Bush has been trying to (to appease the left) by doing so and obviously it's not working. Kick out the press and let our boys (and girls) have at it.............
Our troops would be home for their own 4th of July BBQ!

It's an idea, maybe a good one.
The people we should have gotten out of Iraq is the white house staff and their screw ups, but I fear after years of their bungling it may not matter.

So then nobody will be able to report on the casualty figures amonst both civilians and soldiers, or report any further cases of abuse against Iraqis a la Abu Ghraib, or be able to report the ineffectiveness of the Iraqi government. Essentially nobody will be told of all the bad things that are going on in Iraq. Well that's certainly one way of getting public opinion behind you - by pretending that the bad things don't exist.
*edit* And what, other than the removal of Sadam Hussein, has gone right in Iraq precisely? The US did not neutralise a threat from WMD, because no such weapons existed. Democracy in Iraq is a joke. The people there live in daily fear of gangs, militias, warlords as well being 'collateral damage' from a US strike. It costs an absolute fortune, in lives and money. The Iraqi government's power barely extends beyond the parliament building. The police are corrupt and in the pay of sectarian groups. I'd say thinking things are going well is more of a unicorn fantasy than saying the world has a right to know what is going on in Iraq.
As for "untying the hands of our troops" that sounds dangerously like "let them do whatever they hell they like, chemical weapons, ignoring the Geneva convention - you name it". And then we can be treated to the sight of Mr. Bush putting on his best "defender of the free world" face and justify the slaughter. The conduct of the US in Iraq is already under enough international scrutiny, I don't think you can handle much more. Unless of course you don't mind having 90% of the world detest you on account of your foreign policy.
Never have anything bad to say, eh? I think the insurgency in Iraq is a terrible thing. It is the single biggest problem in the Middle east today. Hundreds of innocent people die every week because of it, as well as many US and UK soldiers. If there was a magic button to make the insurgents go away and for peace to be restored in Iraq who wouldn't press it? Unfortunately the situation is OUT OF CONTROL. The US can't even keep the green zone free of bombs now, let alone the rest of the country. If a fire is burning out of control do you continue to send in firefighters even though they're already dying? Iraq is in a civil war. This is a terrible situation, but there is nothing anyone can do to stop it now.

If they look like an insurgant - Shoot
If they look like there doing something wrong - shoot
If they stand by the gate longer than 2 sec - shoot
If you think they might be Al-quiero - SHOOT
And finally if your gut tells you to - Shoot
All in all, Yes shoot first ask questions later, Because if there minding there own busniess and not up to something they wont get SHOT!

It's not the press that has conducted this foolish venture. They report what they are given to see, and that's it. Journalism is the least of any factors. The troops need to come home, despite the role of the press.

no one is responsible for my actions but me. If someone cheats at a game that does not give my immunity to act the same. If I act dishonorably then then I am dishonored irregardless of others actions. Same goes for this country. Maybe you are okay with surrendering your honor but that is something a bit too important for me to give up.
