Because it's OFFICIAL POLICY. It's called "Fair Game" - the Scientology policy detailing how the organization may confront & handle critics & perceived enemies. Here is a direct quote: "Enemies may be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.”

Because scientology's only rational is its own survival.
Anyone with any critical accumen can soon show it for what it is, a nasty controlling cult wedded to a particularly crazy dogma.
To protect this dogma from critical examination, any criticism needs to be shouted down, destroyed, intimidated, or shunned. That way adherents do not hear of any inconvenient questions.
Healthy religions continually question faith, and conduct dialogue about what the religion means. Unhelathy groups are wedded to dogma, something that is unchangable and not allowed to be criticised.
Because they must protect this dogma from outside criticism, they use processes designed to protect it. this includes not allowing uncomprhending outsiders to hold an opinion about the religion. Shunning is a powerful tool to achieve this. agree with the cult and they will accept you. Question the cult and they will shun you. If you are a member then you will loose your family, friends, and possibly your home and job.
If you question a son or daughter, sister or brother then you will loose conatct with them.
Shunning is a powerful tool for keeping people in line and is used by all cults. Also it means that disusion of scientology within scientology is only undertaken by adherents who support each other in the belief. This is unhealthy in any group. No criticism of the group is allowed or ever heard. This must make the adjerents feel pretty special and 'blessed' with all the special knowledge they have.
This is a common cult process.

Scientology is in simple terms somewhat much less risky than leaping into an energetic volcano. study their teachings in case you prefer, yet stay faraway from their church. Noone would desire to would desire to spend 4 cases what they make in an entire life to alter into enlightened.
