It is considered a no-no on a deep sea fishing boat. Like many fishing techniques and innovations that superstition originated in Hawaii. Some skippers will go as far as to ban no only the bananas , but anything that has banana flavor or aroma.(suntan lotion etc..) Bananas pictures, clothing with bananas prints.
I've been a Deep sea fishing mate then capt. for the last 25 years.I didn't believe that bananas were bad luck. All I can say is that I would rather my customers bring no bananas on board. One story about 3 weeks ago we had a charter . There were 3 boats fishing the same area, 2 of the boats caught a lot of fish, we didn't get one bite. Back at the dock we found out that one of our guests had bananas in a bag.
I'm not saying that i believe that was the reason we didn't get fish, but now I have the mate check those bags for BANANAS on every trip.

Yes. Simply because bananas on the high seas far from the shoreline could get you in serious trouble. Banana of course meaning a joker who does stupid pranks.

Funny but my dad told me that very thing as a child about 40+ years ago. He was usually right.
