I had the same problem; it's no fun at all. Actually the things that helped me most were practicing yoga and getting acupuncture. The needles they use in acupuncture don't hurt at all; it's actually pretty relaxing. Yoga helps build up your muscles, so they don't get sore as easily. I'm kind of shy, so this isn't my bag, but I hear a great massage will do wonders for this problem. You might want to try some sort of deep tissue. The above answers should help with the sleep problem too.

I hope that you find a way to get this resolved. Good luck.

if you sleep on your sides this can cause shoulder pain. If you do try learning how to sleep on your back as this is the best way to prevent pain in the body.

take Advil tablets three times daily to help with the pain. A heating pad applied to the shoulders for twenty minutes prior to bedtime will help relax the muscles.

If you can get a massage I would recommend massage therapy to treat this problem. This would relax the muscles and the therapist could give you advice on what to do to prevent the problem.

I also recommend chiropractic treatment for these types of problems. I've enclosed a web site where you can find a doctor in your area.

All of those treatments (exept drugging yourself) are great. Bowenwork can usually treat this issue in less than 6 sessions.
