Who told you that I was offended by swear words. That is not true. I would never be able to survive in my home if it were a problem for me. I do try and get people to watch their mouth around the children.
Listen, I am a potty mouth myself at times, lol. Get real. I know some Christians think its wrong...but I never take the Lord's name in vain...the rest...well...you gotta express yourself some way.

I don't believe, as others do, that it represents a limited vocabulary. It's just a normal part of the person's speech. Some people swear so often they don't even know they are doing it. Swear words are used so much these days that I think it's just a part of everyday conversation. If you hear swearing every day that's what happens - it becomes the norm. In fact, if you don't swear, you usually stand out for not doing so. It depends who you're speaking to - you wouldn't usually swear when talking to a doctor, for instance. As for different swear words meaning different things - they just evolve with the times.

Yes, I am offended by non-blasphemous swear words because I feel that everyone should try to say something nice or don't say anything at all. This is the way my parents brought me up---to respect all people and not make fun of them or swear while having a conversation with them.

Swearing of any kind reflects bad behavior. Why swear? Many people are offended by non-religious swear words, too.
It shows a lack of "breeding" or "manners." Using language of that kind shows that the speaker doesn't care and isn't being respectful of others.
So, I would say, yes, many religious are offended by all forms of swearing. However, many who consider themselves non-religious are offended, too.
Show you have some class and don't use the swear words. It shouldn't matter whether one is a heathen or not.

Any religious person who acts offended is immature. I don't particularity like when people swear around me, but I don't stop the conversation and ask them to apologize. Even those religious people can drop some pretty nasty words from time to time. I know I do, especially when I hurt myself, it's like a reflex. I once invited a non churchgoing friend to my church and, not thinking, he said some curse words rather loudly in the church parking lot. Some people turned and looked at us and it was a little embarrassing, but then I thought, that's real life. My pastor even almost let one slip out when he was getting very riled up during a sermon one time. It was obvious and he quickly corrected himself. You know what the entire congregation did? We laughed. We shouldn't go around swearing, but when it happens, anyone who wants to act offended just needs to grow up.

Technically, we Christians shouldn't be offended by non-blasphemous curse words, because Jesus taught that only what comes out of us (evil actions and words) defiles us; we are not defiled by what goes into us (like food, hearing curse words spoken by others, etc.) However, many of my Christian brethren are greatly offended by these words, and it's their right.
In the case of non-blasphemous curses, I say nothing unless the speaker is in my home or around my children. I have no right to control someone else's cursing outside my home -- just my own.

I am a woman and I present myself as a lady. I don't curse and preferred not to be cursed around. I live my life that way and people notice it. I work with men all day long and would you know that if I am in the conversation they will not curse around me. I have never asked them not to or condemned them for cursing, but they see that it is not a part of my life and respect that.
It is simply a matter of respect.
Having self-control is a huge part of being an adult. :)

Certain language is crude and offensive all by itself without any religious buggaboos attached. I too, am a heathen..but social mores usually keeps me from swearing in front of a bunch of people who I don't know or in a setting that would be inappropriate...

I think most religious people find swearing offensive because it's one of those things that we believe God has counseled not to do. It's also been said that profanity is the attempt of a feeble mind to express itself forcefully, and a sign of a limited vocabulary. I think people are aware that religious people are sensitive to this, and try to behave accordingly.

They don't like it much, but then old people and slightly snobby upper-class people frown upon it too. i guess it's not just the religious people.
i swear all the time but there is a swear word that i can't stand and it starts with C and ends with T, it's not cat by the way!! so i guess it's a very individual thing.
I'm an atheist by the way :D
