The notary must generally be present when the document is signed. There are very few exceptions and generally this is when the notary personally knows (as in 'good friend' or neighbor) the person signing it.

Not only must the signer complete the document, but he or she must also sign the notary's record log and provide some kind of identification.

What you need to do is find out if the finance company has an "in-house' notary who can also attend the meeting. If not you will have to make arrangements for a notary to join the 'party'.

Bring money.. depending upon where you are and how far the notary has to travel I would guess that those services are going to run you about $50.

Any financial institution filling out a lien release form for you certainly has a notary public on staff. Just tell them you need a certified and notarized release and they should be able to accommodate you.

You should be able to have the lienholder send you the form, they should have exactly what you need to submit to DMV to get a copy of the title. OR, they should send the documents to DMV themselves. You should NOT have to take a notary with you to their offices to get the form signed. Or, if for some reason your lienholder does require you to go to their offices, they should have a notary at their location.
