Because they both come from Latin, they share aspects of grammar and vocabulary. I'm a Spanish speaker, and if someone speaks Italian slowly and clearly, I can pick up some of the words, but definitely not all of them. If I see something written in italian, same thing: I can figure out the gist of it.

they are similar because of their Latin roots. Since I speak Spanish I know that if I had a conversation with an Italian I would not understand him for an exception of similar key word.

Too similar to study at the same time. I had a teacher that tried it and said it was torturous to try to keep them separate. :) I know Spanish and can often read Italian when I see it. Of course, I know no French at all and can often pick bits and pieces of it out when I see it.
:)

I would say at least one third of the words used in the Italian language are in Spanish. they both come from Latin.

Very similar. They are both Romance languages; that is, they both evolved from Latin, the language of the Roman Empire.
For example, white is "blanco (or blanca)" in Spanish and "bianco (or bianca)" in Italian. Black is "*****" in Spanish and "nero" in Italian. Clown in "payaso" in Spanish and "pagliaccio" in Italian.
There are differences: brother and sister are "hermano" and "hermana" in Spanish, but "fratello" and "sorella" in Italian.
My Spanish teacher in high school was Italian-American. She said she could speak Spanish to her grandfather and he's speak Italian back to her, and they could understand each other fairly well.

A lot, even many words are writing in the same way and have the same meaning. You have to consider that both languages are derived it from the Roman language.
