The best way to handle it would be - only if you are asked - to say "We are registered at ___, but a gift card to there would be great!" If someone takes the time to ask you, they want to get you something that you really need/want. So it is appropriate to tell them!

Why would you want just gift cards? I mean if you are asking for a gift card from a certain store then their is obviously stuff that you like at that store. Are you just too lazy to register? Because it is fun. If you just don't want the stuff then don't ask for anything. Let people decide what they want to give you. Most people tend to give money for the wedding anyway. If you want gift cards then fine just make sure you note this somewhere so people don't show up to the store looking for a registry to find out that all they needed to do was purchase a gift card.

Well, I wouldnt really request or spread the word myself. Tell your mom and his mom what stores you guys love the most. That way if any guests ask them what things you guys want, they can tell them the stores and you should then end up with some gift cards. However, some people will want to buy an actual gift for you, so you have to be prepared for that (as far as transporting back to your house, I mean).

As far as etiquette goes..yes it is bad to request gift cards as wedding presents.Wedding presents are sooo much fun to get!!! you can register in three or four stores that you and your fiance' like and just start listing EVERYTHING you would LOVE to get to make your house a home!! Then people go to those stores, look up your lists, and guess what!!!... you have a home filled with everything YOU and hubby ever wanted!! Have fun!!

Er, yes. It's the same as just asking for money.
The proper way to do this is to register for only 10 or so things at the stores for which you would like gift cards. That way, people who are inclined to give gift cards know which stores you like.
Once again... registry information is spread by word of mouth ONLY... do not print this on your invitations, or enclose in the invitations in any way.

It's considered "bad" to request gifts at all.
Tell your family, and they will probably spread the word if someone asks.

Yes, because when people shop for your wedding gifts they aim at getting gifts to show personality, gift cards show nothing at all, but gifts show the time and consideration, one took to get you something you wanted or something special.....

No. I think it makes it easier on folks. They don't have to hunt down the registry items.

I don't think it's bad. It sounds perfectly reasonable.
