Yes, if you are not on an international flight you can fly without a passport. So you will be fine flying within the US just not Canada-US or US-Canada (or any other country).

No one is allowed into the US without a passport effective January 2007. Americans can no longer get back in without a passport.

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

I would think so.
As of January this year, you need a passport to fly into or out of the US, emphasis on fly. So if you were to theoretically enter the US by car using a driver's license or other recognized identification, then go to a US airport, and use the same id you used to enter the US and fly to another US city. I think it would work. It might depend on the airline.

FYI:
In 2008, you will need a passport whenever you enter or leave the US regardless of the mode of transportation used.

You should have your passport with you at all times when in a foreign country.

Although, you won't be asked for it when flying from US city to another US city, as nobody will know if you are Canadian or American.

After 9/11, no. Before - it probably would have been easy. Now you won't get into the country without a passport - even if you are a U.S. citizen. If you do enter the country, you would probably have to stay on the plane.

Probably not, but you'll need your passport to get into the US. Apparently the government is tightening up on rules like this. I would carry mine anyway, because you always want to be able to prove your identity and your country of origin.
