Where do they put those cat-tracking microchips?

My cat has one of those microchips. Whereabouts in his body is it located? And how deep? I want to play a practical joke on my son.

??? There's no practical joke you can play involving a microchip, what a weird thing to suggest.

They're located just under the skin and placed at the back of the neck, though they can move around. They're not magnetic, you can't feel them and you won't know they're there so you can't use them in any way other than what they're for - scanning with a proper tracer.

Im not going to answer that particular question, but I do want to comment regarding to your question. I hope youre not planning to remove the microchip from your cat yourself! Even if youre able to locate where the microchip is, what practical joke can you possibly do using a microchip that is embedded in your cat? Like the others who have commented/responded to this question, I, too feel a little disturbed.

I find your question disturbing. What exactly were you planning on doing? I can't think of any practical joke you could possibly do involving a microchip. They are under the skin at the base of the neck. You can't see or feel it, so your question is really, really bizzarre. Whatever you were thinking of doing, don't. Find another way to play a joke on your son that's not at the expense of your cat.

The microchips are injected into the back of the neck. They are right below the skin, but you can't see or feel them. What exactly were you planning on doing?

Loose skin on the scruff of the neck and yes sometimes rarely you can feel them.
