I'm a working, single mother and wanting to go back to college. I can't afford the expenses and I looked into FAFSA and was told that I would have to attend full time to receive a pell grant. I can't go full time due to my job and my child. Does anyone know of any resources that I can check into that might be able to help me or at least point me in the right direction on getting some help with the expenses?

I recommend waiting a year before starting school because you could actually get more federal and scholarship money that way. Actually, you do not have to go full time to receive a Pell Grant. They do offer money for part-time students. I will list some free resources to locate money to attend college.

First, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.

Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Third, a campus work study job can help with money needed during the school year. The program is funded by the federal government. It will be a job on campus and most times can work to your availability schedule. There should be a box on the FAFSA form for it.

Fourth, fill out the FAFSA form after January 1 of prior to entering college. It will qualify her for need based financial aid from the federal government and the school itself. It will come in the form of scholarships, Pell Grant, student loans, and the work study program.

Fifth, some companies do offer a tuition reimbursement program. Check with your human resources office for more information.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Good luck!

Why can't you go full time? I worked full time, raised four children as a single parent , and was able to attend school full time. FASFA is really good about providing money for tuition and expenses. Full time means taking 12 classes. Start off with the easy classes first. Until you get to your new routine, things do get better, and eventually, your pay check will look good. Your kids will thank you for that in the future.

for most financial aid services you would need to go full time. See if your job will pay for your education. Also look into online classes
