I am a young, working professional that travels a lot and lives in an apartment. As I live alone, there is a possibility that the dog may spend the working day alone. However, when I come home, I am going to want to play with him.
Before I start, it should be known that if I don't feel like I can give the dog a good home, I won't bother.
So I need a dog that can deal with this. My sister used to work with dogs and described Grey Hounds as "60mph couch potatoes" for their fondness for being lazy. Can anyone confirm this? If this is the case, can anyone point me in the direction of a Grey Hound adoption agency? It would be nice to be able to give these dogs a quiet and peaceful retirement after a life of racing.
If the above isn't an option, should I consider doggie day care?
I've lived around dogs my entire life, and not having one is killing me.
P.S Most of my travelling is over the road, so on road trips I would probably be taking him with me.
thanks!

It's possible to make it work if you put some thought into how to deal with the long periods that the dog would be alone. Doggie day care is an excellent idea. My two dogs don't go to day care but they do have a play date once a week during the work week with a doggie friend. If you can afford day care and it is convenient for you, it will make dog ownership much easier.
I keep dogs in pairs because I find two dogs tend to keep each other company.
Greyhounds are indeed 60 mph couch potatoes. They are laid back dogs but do need significant daily exercise that you will need to commit to (either through their daycare program or after work each day). An adult dog that is housebroken is also a good choice because adult dogs can hold their bladders much longer and you don't have to deal with the hassle of housebreaking.
www.petfinder.com is an excellent resource for finding adoption dogs near you. You can search by breed, so if a greyhound resuce is in your area, it should show up.

Wow I'm really glad you are aware that you should be careful in your selection since you can't spend all day with your dog. So many people get wonderful people dogs and then leave them alone all day.
Personally I wouldn't consider a doggie day care because I wouldn't trust people I did not know really well to take care of my dog.
I pretty much have no advice on what kind of dog you SHOULD get, but I can tell you not to get a collie. If you ever settle down more and are in a situation where somebody can be home most of the time with your dog, then GET A COLLIE!!! They are the best dogs...and they love to play! They are super smart too. But they also want more than just about anything to be around their family.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

an older dog is best. over 5 years plus it would be wonderful of you to give an older dog at a rescue or pound a chance b/c these are the ones that usually are put down first. a greyhound needs alot of exercise and room. even an older one. even tho they may have a tendency to be slightly lazy they still need alot of room and they arent going to get it in an apartment. a big dog no matter how lazy can become clumsy without ample space. even a large apartment is not suitable for such a big dog. i would just go to a shelter and look at the older dogs they arent going to have the puppy needs and are already house broken prolly some even might know basic commands.

Many working adults have dogs, a Greyhound may not be very happy in a smaller apartment, you may want to think about a more medium/small breed of dog.
Have you given doxie's any thought? They may be smaller but they have big personality!
Doggie day care may be the way to go, your dog will have attention from people, as well as other dogs. My neighbor is a homemaker and she has my dogs over daily while my husband and I are at work.

it's awesome that you want a dog! they are so wonderful!
Greyhounds are great dogs but they are not that lazy.. and they need a lot of exercise because of there size and long legs..they have alot of energy.
If you like the greyhound look a good dog for you could be a "whippet" It's like a miniature greyhound..very cute, and cuddly but half the size! And half the energy! They are actually more mellow!
My aunt lives in Arizona and has two whippets..she lives in a very small apartment and is gone for working hours too. She has one old one who is very calm and lazy and a puppy that is so so mellow and calm..so this breed is very relaxed!
look them up!
and if you are afraid of your doggy of being lonely you could get two whippets to keep each other company!
There so great because they so lazy and do nothing when your gone, but if your with them they will have like a burst of energy! and play play play! I know from experience, because i stayed with my aunt in her apartment for a while!
and you might want an already trained and house broken dog.. you are probably to busy to house train yourself!
and doggy schools are so expensive! your dog will most likely sleep when your gone!
i hope this helps, and i wish you the best of luck!!

I recently got a dog, and i work all day. I think this is the case for a lot of dog owners. Can you go home at lunch to check in and walk him? I don't think leaving him alone for a full 8hr plus work day is a good idea, definitely not at first.
If you can walk him in the morning, and go home at lunch, i think its a good idea. I don't know much about greyhounds, so i can;t speak to that specifically.
If you are willing to do what it takes to give him a happy home where he isn't going to be alone all of the time, it could be a good idea.
I would suggest taking some of the breed selector quizzes online so you can determine what breeds best fit your lifestyle.

IF you can not get home in the middle of the day and there is no one to let a puppy out when you are not there you sold consider an adult dog.
Yes Greyhounds can make excellent pets, and may that are retirer from the tracks or palced through Greyhound rescue organizations.

I was recently in your position - way to do your research! I'm glad to read that you want to give a dog a good home. Greyhounds are big, but big dogs can be happy in apartments as long as they're exercised - kind of like little dogs. Great Danes are also notably couch potatoes.
Good luck!

i don't think of it is user-friendly which you get a dogs once you're purely going to make it stay outdoors. you're able to truly wait till you progression out or till your loved ones is keen to enable the dogs stay interior. canines are p.c.. animals and don't delight in being excluded from the p.c... Edit: A husky? in case you have become a dogs in any respect, don't get one with thick fur. even if in case you do exercising her or him on a daily basis, it is not user-friendly. Wait till every physique needs a dogs interior or don't get a dogs! Edit: Cloudstrife, you sound like a poor dogs proprietor. Your father and mom not prepared to spend the money isn't an excuse. "yeah constructive bud decide for it i've got been given a dogs she lives outdoors interior the warmth xD" You smile on the certainty you flow away your dogs outdoors interior the warmth, and that its' shield is a TRASH CAN?
