On a pack of bamboo skewers it says they need to be soaked before use. Why is this?

So they don't burn.
You can also wrap a piece of tinfoil around the end with no food on it but still soak the skewers before using.

Because they are dry, and you are going to put them over some hot coals...what happens to dry wood and heat? FIRE!

Bamboo soaks up the water, thus not burning for some time when it goes over the heat.

Just simply soak them in water. You need to do it for at least 30 minutes to keep them from burning when you put them on the grill.

I believe that means before you use them to cook with. Such as on the grill or whatever. It's so they won't burn.

So they don't ignite and burn away. Wet wood will not burn, it may scorch a little, but should survive the cooking.
