My husband and I own two american pit bull terriers and they love everyone!... alot of people dont even know what a "pit bull" is or what they look like!.. Most people think that a "pit bull" is a breed of dog, and its not! "Pit bull" is just a term that alot of people use to describe American pit bull terriers, American staffordshire terriers and Staffordshire bull terriers. People (like myself and my husband) that have worked with these breeds for years, have trouble telling if a dog is a "pit bull" or not 100% of the time!.. I think that most people are just uneducated about these breeds and thats why they fear them and try to have them banned from their cities! People fear what they dont know. To me, it is so sad that people can be like that, and I really feel bad for them... But anyway, to answer your question, I think some people will lie just to try to get "pit bulls" banned from where they live and I think that some people just really have no idea what a "pit bull" is.

If a dog has a remotely squared jaw, they are labels a "pit mix" I have seen this done at my animal control office more than once, and they are right about 10% of the time.

Larger, powerful dogs that are untrained and bite can undeniably do major damage to a human than a chihuahua, so these stories make it on the news, giving the breeds these stigmas.

Punish the deed, not the breed. Idiot owners, make idiot dogs. No matter what the breed.

None of those dogs on that site looked remotely pit to me, I work in rescue and I can tell from a Am Staff from a Am. Bulldog, and these ding dongs cant figure out that those dogs are not pits?

No, it's not fair..

But that's the media for you.

They're not "trying" to get Pit Bulls in trouble. They're just "trying" to sell their newspaper, news show, or what have you. Pit Bull attack stories sell, because that's what people believe.

Why do people believe it?

Because they hear it all the time on the news.

Catch 22.

But the next time you see a "vicious" dog incorrectly labeled as a pit bull, take the time to make a complaint.

If enough of us start complaining, hopefully they'll stop mislabeling dog breeds.

I own pit bulls and my next door neighbor is a breeder. Her dogs are only sold to families willing to take the proper care of the animals.

I love our dogs...they are funny, charming, gentle, and protective. They have never attacked anyone or any animal. They were raised to chase balls, sticks and Frisbee's. They were not raised to attack and so they do not attack.

Any breed of dog can be vicious. And if we look at historical records, the Pit Bull is not even in the top ten of attack animals.

I firmly believe that if dog owners take proper care of their animals, then vicious attacks will cease. We surely all know someone who cannot or will not properly take care of their dogs....these are the people we need to change.

As for the hysteria about the Pit Bull, much of it is driven by the inaccurate reports from the media. It is a shame.

And while I am on my soapbox, if you own a dog or cat, unless specifically used as a breeder, spay or neuter your animal. Be responsible. Be safe. Be considerate.

I think it is more ignorance than some kind of intention. But you should consider the source you got these stories from. This is a site with an obvious agenda.

I will admit however, that it makes people feel slightly more comfortable to hear about another pit bull attack. It means they know the "good dogs" are safe, and makes them feel they know what to watch out for.

The term "Pit-bull" is used like Kleenex. Most are something else, but people just use the term.
Many people could not identify the differences in various breed with heavy muzzles.

I've never liked pit bulls but now I know it's the media and ignorant people who have made me this way. Those pictures don't even look remotely like pits! Great info... thanks.

People are idiots!!! My pits were the most loving and lovable dogs I've ever known! They were a little rough and rowdy, but they never hurt nobody...

I don't think they INTENTIONALLY look to get pits in trouble- they are simply ignorant about dog breeds!
