It is appalling to see some of what passes for writing here, isn't it? People don't seem to recognize that language is the material with which we think, and that we really ought to be careful how we use it.

Honestly, I don't think that failing to live up to an entirely arbitrary set of linguistic rules is either lazy or 'butchering'.
Our native tongue is different from what it was fifty or one hundred years ago, and people have been complaining about others misusing it for aeons. If no one had 'butchered' it, we'd still sound like, "Hwaet we Gar-dena in gear-dagum theodcyninga..."
Put down the Lynne Truss, take a deep breath, and realize that there are different registers in which people can choose to speak and type. This is Yahoo! Answers, not a résumé.

No...I don't think the Tower of Babel or God have much to do with it...its text messaging, email, poor schools, RAP music and the inability to use spell check.

The Internet is full of places where writing is butchered. It seams to have breed laziness in typing and completely killed spelling.

God broke up language because we were encroaching in on his territory. The ants had almost escaped the ant farm and invaded his bowl of captain crunch and he wasn't going to let that shlt go down.

No, it did not. There is a pathetic lack of either ability or willingness to speak and write grammatically. Are people too lazy or are they uneducated? My verbal pet peeve, people using "I was like" to mean "I said," is like fingernails on a blackboard.

The harder God smote your ancestors when building the Tower the more confused your understanding of language will be. This will result in saying statements like "You are going to hell." as:
"Your going to hell."
"u r goign to hlel."
"Yor go to ell."
and my personally favorite
"*(#*(@ hell"
