By back up power supply, I mean like one for a computer in case the power goes out. For example:

Power Supply: http://www.powercom-usa.com/ProductDetail.asp?ID=3618 \

Electric Lawnmower: http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?CNTTYPE=PROD_META&CNTKEY=misc%2fsearchResults.jsp&BV_SessionID=@@@@0216561975.1179162371@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdhaddkmegeielcgelceffdfgidgll.0&MID=9876

Or do you think it will destroy the electric lawnmower and/or power supply?

I think the backup supply for a computer could be used for any appliance. I was thinking it would be cool to hook it up to my tv. I doubt if the lawn mower would run, or if it did it would be for a very short time because it uses a lot more power in watts than a computer.

The short answer is: YES

Will it work? Not a prayer. A UPS is designed to keep a computer running long enough for the computer operator to shut down the computer gracefully. That should take slightly over an amp for about 5 minutes.

A lawn mower draws many amps and would drain the UPS in less time than it would take for the blades to move a single revolution.

You would have to get a rather large UPS or battery back up system. Unless you wanted to recharge every few minutes. The lawn mower uses a lot more electricity than a computer.

some electric lawnmower motors are brush type that will work on DC voltage. so pile up 10 of those 12 volt car batteries on a little red wagon and you are good to go
