If a male dog isn't neutered, it's MUCH more likely to develop aggressive behaviors once it reaches maturity. It's also likely to start lifting it's leg and urine-marking everything in the house, and doing everything it possibly can to escape if it smells a female in season nearby. A male dog can smell a female dog in heat for a long distance, and will do just about ANYTHING to get out, from chewing holes in doors & walls to digging under or through fences. Once he gets out, he'll get into fights with other male dogs and could even be seriously injured or killed in one of those fights. An unneutered dog is also at risk of testicular cancer. I had a good friend who began advocating neutering after losing his favorite dog to testicular cancer. He'd kept him intact because he was such a good dog that he wanted to breed him - unfortunately, that shortened his life, so he had less time on Earth with that wonderful dog, and none of the puppies could ever replace him in his heart.

Neutering will reduce mating-related aggressive behavior and escaping, but will NOT change the basic personality of the dog, and will NOT make him fat or lazy. Overfeeding and underexercising are what make dogs (and cats) fat and lazy - not spaying and neutering. The same basic issues apply to cats, except that in cats, unneutered male cat urine smells 100X worse than regular cat pee. Also, if a male cat gets out & gets into fights, he'll be exposed to incurable diseases such as FIV and FIP. Many unneutered cats end up being abandoned on the street or surrendered to shelters after they reach maturity and the owners realize just how obnoxious an unneutered male can really be.

If a female cat isn't spayed, it will go into numerous 'heat' cycles, during which time she will YOWL at the top of her lungs for 24 hours a day and drive everyone in the house crazy. She will do everything in her power to get outside, including ripping out screened windows and doors. Unspayed cats are at risk of uterine infections, uterine cancer, and breast cancer. Spaying her will make her a much better companion. A female dog in heat can't be taken out in public, because it will drive any unneutered male dogs in the area bonkers. If they try it, they may find themselves being attacked by other dogs, and if a male dog gets to their female, they will breed - a male dogs 'locks' together with the female when they are mating, and cannot be separated until the female is bred, no matter what you do to the male. Female dogs in heat bleed, and need to wear diapers while they're in heat or they'll make a mess of their house. They must be kept inside ALL the time, because male dogs will break into their yard to get to the female to breed. Unspayed female dogs are also at risk from uterine infections and cancers, and breast cancers, just as unspayed female cats are.

Dogs and cats are NOT people. They do not breed for love or pleasure or recreational purposes - they breed only because they are driven to do so by their hormones. They will NOT miss their reproductive organs, and they will not be 'unfulfilled' if they are altered. They WILL be healthier and happier pets if they are spayed and neutered, and will be MUCH easier to live with.

I hope that you are able to convince these people, for the sake of their pets. But some people just seem to have a mental block about such things, and will only learn after a bad experience. Good luck! I'm glad you're such a responsible pet owner!

I think you're also asking about low-cost spay/neuter programs? Check with shelters in your area, and your local animal control - they should be able to refer you to low-cost or free spay/neuter resources in your area.

The best thing for any dog or cat whether in door or outdoor is to be spayed or neutered. There is no reason to keep an animal intact unless you are a breeder. Is not only a matter of unwanted pregnancies, but of health of the animal, and behavior. I just had to watch my friend put down her dog at 8 years old, because of rampant cancer - dog not spayed. My cousin had the same thing happen - not spayed.
There are places like the humane society that will do it for a discounted price.
Some people think it is "cruel" to spay or neuter. It is actually the other way around. The animals will enjoy a much better life as will the owner after being fixed.

To the people who say you can't force people to do something - no of course you can't, but you can help them to make their decision by making sure they have all the right information, which these people clearly don't.

Tell your friends that the main reason to neuter an animal is to protect it's health. Neutering female dogs is of the utmost importance because older unspayed b itches are so prone to mammary tumours and pyometra, which spaying saves them from. Neutering male dogs saves them from testicular and prostate cancer. The same goes for male and female cats.

I say, well done to you for trying to help some animals. Who cares if they're not yours - if you saw some animals being abused you wouldn't turn the other cheek just because they're not yours would you? People don't have the right to do whatever they want with their animals, they should be doing what's best for them, not what they want.

its called a humane society. and its not always free sometimes they have free spay neuter clinics several times a year. but even if its not free its still low cost. less than 70 dollars normally. when you'd spend over 200 at a vet. theres not always a need to get your animals fixed if they are only going to be indoors. i have a male cat who is about to turn 4 and hes not fixed and ive never had a problem with him spraying etc. he has no desire to leave the house and i never plan to take him outside. so its not a problem for me.

I got my catsfixed when they were kittens and this was before they start going into heat. Getting animals fixed can reduce health problems in the future. So there is a benefit plus a headache saved when the cat/dog goes into heat. I would advise her to see her vet and inquire about her options and the benefits of getting them fixed.

I would leave them alone. They have two animals of different species and chances are that because they are indoor they wont have babies. If youre still concerned I would just try to convince them that their lives will be a lot easier if they are fixed because they wont have to deal with two animals in heat.

You can't force them to do anything! Lay off a bit, they are not your animals, and sometimes people have to learn the hard way, but like I said, getting their pets fixed is not your choice so really, you should stay out of it!
