I just got a dog today. she's a golden retriever. this is my second dog. The first was an Alsation.

I want to keep the dog inside the house but i need to train her first. Would really appreciate any advice on toilet training her.

also she likes to lick my hands a lot. what's that about?

Goldens are one of my favorite breeds. They learn quickly and do anything to please. Their hearts are just humble and always ready to please their humans.

Do not fear. It is not easier to housebreak a puppy. Adults take days to house train not weeks or months like a puppy. I much prefer older dogs because they learn so quickly. The only issue is the sheer size of their mistakes compared to a puppy mistake. Just keep the carpet spot shampooer handy for accidents.

Take your dog out often. When she "goes" praise her greatly then come back in. She will learn quickly. If she has an accident inside, then say "NO" firmly and immediately take her out. She will learn. Goldens do not like to displease mom and Dad.

The only bad things about them, is #1 they shed profusely. Daily grooming with a shedding blade will make your life much easier. And #2 they have some genetic breed problems including hip dysplasia, allergies, and ear problems. Keep a close watch on these areas for potential health issues.

You need to housebreak her first. Is she a puppy or older? She needs exercise a good walk at least twice a day. This will also help her learn to re leave herself outside. If you're not crate training her at least keep her confided when you're not around. You don't want to give her the run of your house unsupervised. Take her out first thing in the morning after her meals and every time she wakes up from a nap during the day.

The licking could be two things she is being submissive or she just likes the salt. Golden Retrievers too, is a very affectionate breed.

Congratulations on your new furry friend. Good luck;^)

Well i used to have g golden retriever! They are unusually smart and very willing to do what you want! I trained my dog very easily he knew about 20 different tricks and was house- broken.

It's a lot easier to house break a puppy than a grown dog!

house training: For the first couple weeks you have to take your dog outside yourself, until he gets it through his head that he "goes" outside! This is one of the hardest steps..be VERY patient! Most people can't even do this step because it takes alot of patience and they give up. A dog will have accidents..no matter what.. deal with it..don't kill your dog..just lightly punish him, and let him know that's bad..

to get even more in depth..
if you want him to poop in a certain area..
take him by leash into that area only!
and always REWARD your pooch for going outside and doing what YOU want them to do! make it a BIG deal!!

if you don't know when he has to go..
you have to watch him and learn his habits..

and your dog probably just likes the way your hand tastes! Because you eat with your fingers..she can probably taste some yummy food or something..

Congrats on your new dog! Keep her inside even as you're training her - take her outside frequently and praise her like mad when she pees outside. Goldens are smart, she'll get the hang of it.

She is probably licking you because she likes your flavor and she likes YOU.

Look into crate training - it helps a LOT with adjusting to a new home, training, etc. Best of luck to you!

well the first thing to do is get a crate to potty train her. put her in the crate at night and then during the day work with her by putting her out every 20-30 min and then bring inside. it usually takes about 1-2 weeks to potty train and once you use a crate they don't like going potty where they sleep. i breed goldens and this is how i train mine and it works really well as long as you are consistant with taking them out to potty. the licking is her way of saying that she loves you very much. mine all do the same thing and that is there way to prove their loyalty. but to house train use the crate it is the only way to train your dog. so when you put hr in the crate use it at night and then during the day put her out every 20-30 min and then bring her inside. the best time to put her out while she is in is after she eats, after a nap, after playing, and when she starts sniffing around. try that and see what happens and if she responds to that training. when she does go outside and she pottys then you need to make sure that you praise her for doing her duty outside and not in the house. make the training a game and make it fun, thats what i do and they love it. well i hope this helps and good luck with the potty training.

Niner Rosie is ABSOLUTELY right!!! The best, easiest, and fastest way is crate training. Google "crate training" and they will give you full details, as well as helpful "hints". You are now the proud parent of the most gentle, sweet, willing to please, loving dog!! They are awesome, beautiful dogs. And I commend you for keeping her inside!!!! They are very loving, and are never happier than when they are with you. She will be your constant companion, but she would be miserable outside. Training now, and regular vet visits will assure you of a wonderful loving companion for years to come..Good-Luck and Congratulations!!!

Obedience training would be your best bet. But I think you'll find books about dog behavior and training at the library as well.

house broken takes time..you need to know at one times of the day your dog has to go out side.. usly after they eat or drink.. and soo or alater they get the idea that then go out side...but like i said it takes time...
i think one reson why dogs lick hands is because he earther tast food..or its salty...and dog likes any thing with flavor
