What you cannot see:

lungs and digestive system (stomach, small and large intestine) because u/s cannot see through air. In fact, that is why the technologist puts a gel on your skin before touching you with the transducer (camera). You must acheive an air free contact between the skin and transducer.

Ultrasounds can include the heart, liver, gall bladder, any thing in the abdomen, the ovaries, in a car accident to check for abdominal bleding, breasts, to do a needle biopsy of the organs. They can be used to check for blood flow in the legs and the carotid artierys in the event of a stroke, or blood clot. As you can see ultrasounds are have many uses, many of which can be life saving.

It's to diagnose a variety of things. It can show blood flow to anywhere in the body, any abnormalities of just about any internal organ - really there's thousands of uses.

They used one on me when I was having a lot of stomach pain. They were able to diagnose me as passing gall stones. My gall bladder was removed 2 days later. No more pain!

You can use it to find internal defects in some manufactured parts for aircraft, ships, car, etc.

I used to have to do this when I was an inspector for the Feds.

The military uses them as a form to scan buildings also they are looking into weather it can be used as a weapon or not :) but the xray properties are very promising so far :)
