I found a wonderful stray cat on saturday. I however, did not keep it and gave it to teh humane society because I am currently un-employed and living off of my student loans. I am a full time student and am never home as I am always at school. I am barely getting by right now. I felt this would not be fair to the kitty I found. I also live in a small apartment which I also do not think is condusive to the well being of the kitty either. I called around to different Humane Societies and chose one that I felt was the best for the kitty and took it it there hoping it will find a loving family that will give it a great home. I also plan on being notified about the family who adopts the kitty.
I have felt awful since. I am crying a lot.
Did I make the right desicion? I have felt that I would be selfish if I kept the kitty under my dire circumstances. Was I eing selfish by taking it to teh humane society? Or was I selfish for keeping it?
Please, help!

I am a volunteer! Thanks for suggesting that I would be great!! That means a lot!! All of these answers are wonderful!!
I don't know about being a foster parent. I would get very attached to these animals and want to adopt them :)! I only had this kitty for one day and I cried so hard when I finally decided to give it up for adoption. I actually drove their twice. I turned around first because I couldn't do it and wanted to figure out a way to keep the kitty and asked a few wonderful people who maybe would like a kitty. This has been the hardest thing I have ever done. I am still very sad. I am glad that everyone thinks I did the right thing. Thank you!!

SWEETIE you did the best for the kitty.that was good that you looked at all the pros and cons for having a pet in an apartment. and finding the best place that kitty will get a great happy home for the rest of kitty;s life...I live in Seattle and where i live people always are dropping there cats on the streets to fin for themselves and that is a death sentence right there ,,, i have trapped a few and got them adopted to loving homes; but sadly the rest are so fearful of humans ;that they will not even come out till dusk..... I am a single mom but i love animals and buy a 30pound bag of food to feed all hungry cats 'that want to eat,,,,,,thank you for helping your kitty also...you can get a pet when your going to be home more and are ready for all that has to be done to have loving pets....good luck always.

You did exactly the right thing. Please don't be sad; you did the wise thing . You obviously have a big heart & love animals, but you aren't ready for one now. You need to be in a stable environment & financially able to afford one. You know, rescue organizations always need volunteers - you'd be GREAT! You can volunteer as much or as little as you like. You could assist at adoption fairs, or you might like walking dogs at a shelter (sometimes the only exercise they get is if a volunteer comes & does it), or cleaning cages at the humane society or a pet store that showcases rescued animals - that is a lot of fun, as cleaning time is usually the only time the animals get out of their cages to play & they love it & are so funny! Also you might volunteer as a "short-term" foster home, where you only keep a kitty or puppy a few days to give it a break from caged life over a weekend, or while a regular foster home goes on vacation. That way, you experience some of the pleasure of having a pet, while learning a lot about animals, their needs & how to provide responsible care, while not making a long-term committment yet.

As everyone else said, you need to take the kitty to the vet. I just wanted to say that I too rescued a cat once... he had fleas literally jumping up and down on him, and had gobs of green gunk coming out of the corners of his eyes and his nose. He didn't have to contend with a dog, but he was in pretty bad shape. Nine years later, he is healthy and happy. He's the best pet I ever had. He knows I rescued him and not a day goes by he doesn't let me know he appreciates it. If you keep the kitty, he/she will do the same for you. Good luck!

I think giving him up was the right decision. You are not in a good place to have to worry about the kitten. It will give you something to look forward to when you have more time and a job. Good Luck and think of how happy the kitty will be when he is place with a big loving family.

You did the right thing. Don't feel bad. You couldn't give him a good home so you took him to a place where he might find the home that he needs and deserves. He will find a loving home that will spend all the time in the world with him. I hope that you feel better. Good luck.

You did the right thing. You gave the cat its best chance at having a good home. It has nothing to do with "being selfish".

You rule. Don't be sad. You made the right choice. I agree with the person who said that as soon as you graduate, you'll be able to adopt a great kitty. You will!

You did the right thing. You know that you can't afford it or
care for it like it needs. Pat yourself on the back and feel
better. When you graduate and get a job and a place of
your own then you can get a kitty.

It's OK. They'll find a good home for the cat. taking care of a cat is pretty cheap, cats are low maintenance. If you can't give it a good home you did the right thing.
