I have flown often with KLM in recent years, since they usually had the best connections and prices from my city to the rest of Europe, and North America (and the world! but I only had to go to Europe and NA...). Every interaction I had with KLM was good--and that's hard to say about airlines these days. They consistently exceeded my expectations, in some small way, every time I travelled with them.
For example, free sandwich and beverage service on a flight that was just over an hour (unheard of on most airlines these days!), upgrades and switching to better seats even without asking, pleasant and efficient checkin, crew, transfer, reservations, and service desk personnel, endorsing a ticket that a travel agent had made a mistake on, generous frequent flyer program, great airport (AMS), and like I said--they were almost always the cheapest option (always cheaper than SAS, in my experience). Additionally, KL are partners with Northwest, Continental, Delta, and Air France, so I get miles on my account when I fly them, and I have even redeemed frequent flyer tickets on these partner airlines using KL miles. Their booking site is easy for tracking down best fares, too.

KLM is a very good airline, nothing but good things to say. Have flown them twice, and plan to again.

It's one of the best airlines in the world. Amsterdam is a great airport as well - also one of the best in the world.
