None of the crap you buy in a dollar store or K-mart or places like that is going to work. And NEVER put flea collars on your cat! They contain POWERFUL chemicals which are NOT good for your kitty!
You're going to have to bite the bullet and fork out the 30 bucks or so for Advantage or Frontline (that's three applications, you HAVE to apply it every 30 days!). And if it's the first batch you've ever bought, you'll have to get the "plus" kind, so it kills the eggs, too. I've used them both, I prefer Frontline. My kitties are flea- and tick-free!

Which spot-on have you tried? You should know that spot-ons from petshops are pretty useless. Flea collars are also useless, even the veterinary ones - the flea has to walk over the collar to die, so they don't kill much really.
Get something like Frontline, it's the best stuff. You need to make sure it gets right on the skin, not the fur or it might not work well. This means parting the fur to expose the skin, and I suggest putting it in a few different places on the back of the neck to stop it pooling and flooding onto the fur.
If fleas are present, you will need to treat your house with a spray too, as the fleas will be in the environment. Once you've sprayed your house a couple of times and used Frontline spot on for a couple of months you should be OK to move on to Frontline Plus which treats both the animal and the environment and lasts for 6 weeks, it's great stuff.

If the cat is covered in fleas and you really need to get them off quick, you can take your life in your hands by washing the cat in plain Dawn dishwashing liquid. This stuns the fleas. Get a flea comb and comb/pick the fleas off. WARNING: the fleas are NOT killed by this, so have something ready to put them in (like a bowl of vinegar) as you pick them off. Otherwise, they'll come back to life and just jump back on the cat.
You can also use Sevin dust. You buy this in the gardening section of your local Walmart or similar store. It's used to keep bugs off tomatoes, but you can LIGHTLY dust your cat's backend with it to get the fleas off. You can also sprinkle it on your floors and furniture, then vacuum it off. This will kill the fleas and you can vacuum them up. If you put this on your cat, do not get it on the head area of the cat. You can cause a respiratory reaction that causes your cat to go into respiratory arrest.
The best thing, IMO, is to use Frontline on your cat. I don't know exactly what Spot On is or if it is similar, but Frontline is the best. It will take up to 48 hours for the fleas to get off your cat, but then the frontline will stop the cycle of fleas (as long as you treat the cat every month).
Never use Hartz products or the stuff you buy at the grocery store. Many products sold at the grocery have actually killed beloved pets.
Good luck! :)

I got rid of my feral's fleas in about a week. I did a few things
-bathed the kitten
-applied Advantage three days later (you can't apply Advantage for 3 days after bath, and Frontline for 1-2 days)
-sprayed the entire house with an organic flea spray. I did one room at a time, and put the kitten in the room that was not sprayed. Did over several hours. Vacuumed after spraying each room
-washing everything made of fabric (bed sheets, all laundry, etc).

If you go to the Vet and buy the product Bio Spot for cats this will get rid of the fleas and their eggs!!!
Also Advantix for cats or Frontline for cats all these products are good!!!!
The dosage goes by the weight of your cat. You may not be giving the right dosage. The medication goes on the cats coat between its shoulder blades. This medicince last for a month at a time.!!
Good Luck
P.S, It does work!!!

I know this sounds crazy but it works. Comb them off! Take a little flea comb and a zip lock baggie. Get the cat comfortable in your lap, stroke him get him relaxed. Then run the comb through his hair deep down to his skin. You will see little black dots on the comb. Pull the black dots off and put them into the bag and zip it. Keep doing this for as long as he lets you. Do this day after day, it will take a few days and he'll keep getting new ones from the carpet etc. Put flea powder in your vacuum and vacuum as often as you possibly can, keep vacuuming and keep putting flea powder in your vacuum bag and change the bag too! Keep combing the fleas out of your cat - he will learn to love it! To me this is the best way to get rid of fleas! If he goes outdoors it's really a hopeless cause though! Good luck, it really works!

We use Frontline for our cats. If we have a bad flea infestation(happens sometimes), the fleas will be totally gone in only a week or two.

Advantage is the best thing I've used on my cats. Apply once a month and fleas are killed on contact with the cat.

If the cat is old enough, have them flea dipped to remove the already existing fleas and eggs and get a flea treatment to put on the back of their necks.

The quickest way is Capstar. A product that kills fleas immediately, but if you are treating the cat, and you are still getting fleas, it is because your environment is infested with them. For that you will need to treat your entire house. If your cat goes outside, you should also treat the yard.
You can find Capstar here>
