In addition to what's been mentioned earlier, normal is what you can expect or predict from someone or an environment. If you drop a ball it will fall to the ground and bounce back up - that's normal. If everybody is quiet in an elevator that's also normal. Normal is partly something we can expect and predict will be true with some accuracy.

It follows then that normal forbids spontaneity and uniqueness. If you're standing in line and suddenly start dancing - that goes against all expectations and is not normal, standing in line is normal. A dinner date is common and expected, so it's normal. Something like a picnic is more random so it's not normal. Most of normality is defined by what we expect. To a certain extent this hinges on society, but it also relies on our own experiences and expectations.

Interestingly almost everyone thinks they're not normal, often as part of the "I'm special" syndrome... however the reality is that the vast majority of people who believe they're not normal actually are normal.

For most people, normal is the usual behavior of the group they identify with. It may be normal for a particular fraternity house to pull down their pants and show people their butts or it may be normal for KKK members to hate all races other than white. It's normal for a schizophrenic to act crazy. That is, it's normal within these groups, but may seem aberrant if you are not in those groups :-) It may be normal for you to be kind and loving and I hope it is!!

normal I've read some answers and you are right there really is no normal.... I think along the lines as natural... what is natural.... like is it natural for someone to eat when they are hungry, or drink when they are thirsty... when the human race goes far out of whack... then I look to see what's natural in the animal wild life... at least there they still have nature.... so that's my take on normal normal should reflect natural.

I'm in the midst of questioning that myself. To me (relating to not just religion) normal seems to be whatever the culture, or subculture you were born into and what activities, beleifs, likes, and dislikes you are supposed to have in that culture. There's also some subcultures that we as a society are supposed to look up to and aspire to. To me it seems like in America what is normal is the suburban, middle class household who holds mostly Protestant beliefs, however in America we also have the upper crust business people, gov't positions, movie stars, and socialites that we are supposed to aspire to and emulate.

And of course not having any health or disability issues is supposed to be normal.

the standard, a consensus among the masses of what is a custom, of what is orthodox. What is normal changes throughout time and cultures, so there's no definite answer to what is normal.

What does the Word say is normal? Whatever the God calls normal, that is what is normal.

Something to be avoided. If you take the centre point of all the bell-curves that describe human characteristics, you will have a despicable creature suitable only for a glue factory.
