I've been using NT 4.0 and now I need to upgrade but I'm not thrillled with what I'm reading about Vista

They're very very close. Media Centre is almost a superset of XP Pro, except when it comes to joining a domain: it's not supported, and although you can do it during setup, you'll break any usage of Media Centre Extender units.

I would probably go with XP Pro, unless you want the
extra stuff.

Windows XP Media 2005 is Windows XP Professional with the Media utilites added in.

You should be able to do anything in XP Media as you can in XP Professional.

Its not important to go for the xp professional u can work on xp media centre and for the vista u must have at least 512mb ram and i suggest u must only use the vista if u have 2gb ram

Install Linux and use that as an office server. You could use a slightly older PC if all you want is a file and print server. And it won't cost you $400.
