What you are hearing about refers to people who try to remove large discolored lesions that they think are moles, but are in fact melanomas, when you do this, you release cancerous cells from the melanoma into your blood stream where they can travel to almost any part of the body and cause a new cancer. If what you scratched was such a "new" mole, you likely have nothing to worry about.

Once will not do it unless it was already infested with cancer cells. If you noticed a change in it's appearance before or after you scratched it, don't fool around. Go to a dermatologist and get it removed and biopsied. Better safe than sorry.

No, it's just no a good idea. So many germs will get into your skin while you are picking it off.
