I know it is there for my protection but I dont have internet on this computer and I never put new docs from other computers into this computer. It is a hassle and just slows me down! How can I turn it off? It takes a good two to three minutes everytime I open a saved doc. It is driving me insane. Please help.

You haven't specified which anti-virus application you are using so this may or may not apply to your setup. In McAfee, look at the "On Access" scan properties and add exclusions to particular file types or to directories (and optionally sub-directories). I'm guessing that Norton and other anti-virus applications have a similar on access scan action that you can modify. I would encourage you to leave the regular disk scans enabled unless you really are never connected to an external network and never transfer files to your computer. Optionally if you transfer files via removable media, you could manually scan the transfer media to ensure that any new information is at least scanned once.
