Wow. It's really good to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I say problem but how can it be when it makes so much sense. Bananas are foul. There's a lot of things I don't particularly like and would do my best to avoid eating but only the 'B' word makes my skin crawl. Others laugh and think I'm just exaggerating and do the whole "ooh here's a banana" thing but they don't realise quite how deep my repulsion of these revolting yellow squidgy smelly things lies. Someone once as a joke (haha. no really...) put a banana skin under my pillow as I slept. I had hideous nightmares all night and woke up screaming. Maybe a bit of an over-reaction but still... I work in a cafe where I sometimes have to (under duress) put bananas in smoothies. I have to scrub my hands with VERY hot water and soap afterwards whilst trying not to vomit! You are not alone and one day the world will realise what we already know, that bananas are evil! Well I can dream... :)

Is bananaphobia (fear of bananas) really weird? Because I think I have it (I have been told so) and I have never heard of anyone else who has it, and I was wondering if anyone else did or is it just completely weird??

Well, I can tell you from personal experience that you are not alone in this. I had a neighbor/friend years ago who very clearly had this same phobia, specifically of bananas. I was not aware of it--------she was a perfectly normal person in every way--------until one morning when I was preparing breakfast for my 1-year-old son while she sat having coffee at my kitchen table (she had come over earlier than usual) and as I turned to get a banana to peel & slice for him, I heard the front door slam shut..........................and she then called to explain that she was unable to be there while a banana was around!
It's not an allergy, just an aversion. I can't say that I understand it, but given the enormous range of things that people develop phobias to, I would never call it "weird."

No pet it isn't weird. There are so many different phobias out there and it just takes a little thing to trigger the mechanism in you brain to react to it. I have a fear of feet, I really can't stand them and believe me there are times I wish i didn't have my own. Now that's weird.

that's one I haven't heard of...but phobias in general are pretty common. By definition a phobia is an irrational fear though......so why not bananas. I have a phobia of vomit....so I kindof understand. I've found that just explaining to people that you know your fear is not rational, but that it's not something you can just will away is the best way to handle it. That way people don't try to explain to you that there is nothing to be afraid of.

Is there really such a thing? What does it do to you?Is it the taste, the colour, the shape or what. I just can't imagine it somehow. If it is a problem then surely all you have to do is make sure none are brought indoors to your house.Apart from in your kitchen, or the supermarket and greengrocers where else will you see them.I think it is weird but controllable.

It's not weird to me as I also hate bananas. Can't stand the smell of them (especially the over-ripe ones), can't stand the stringy bits inside them, and cant bear the texture of them - feels like eating slugs.
I have to very careful with my kids as they love them and I don't want to pass on my problems to them. I just peel them and think of all the good they're doing them!
