Find the name of a certifying agency and ask them. I presume you are talking about commercial products. If you see a product that is "certified", it should have the name of the body that certifies it. I would find out who that is and then ask them.

It used to be a simple process of using widely trusted methods that were created by those people who wanted to live organic lifestyles. However, as it became more popular more and more people/corporations started marketing things as organic using looser and looser standards. This led to regulation of the use of the term organic by the US Department of Agriculture. Now there are strict rules you must follow, as shown in the link below, but it has also become very expensive to become certified.

At the local farmer's market where we buy our products they have up a sign on several of the stalls that reads "We were organic before you had to be certified by the government to use the term. Nothing has changed in our products, but we now can't afford the fees in order to use the name."

That's sad.

Best of luck to you!!

I would suggest that you contact your local agriculture department or agency and they will tell you the steps you will need to take to become certified. Sometimes there is a cooperative extension at the local colleges if you have one in your area.
