absolutely. I dont know why because they are going through a 'tough time' that they deserve to escape justice.

How about thinking of Maddy for once people and not the people who have contributed to her possible death.

I totally blame the parents for this happening...just because they wanted to dine without the kids. I'm a parent of a 13 month old & wouldn't dream of leaving her alone for 1 second not even when I go out into the garden to do jobs, she always comes with me where I can keep an eye on her.
I hope they are arrested on their return to the UK & charged for the neglect of 3 children. If this had happened to a single parent the media would have had a field day by ripping them to shreds about the lack of care-I am married before someone says I'm sticking up for single parents because I am one.
That little girl, through no fault of her own, would have been or still is absolutely terrified, how on Gods earth can you put your own child through that. I don't even treat my cats like that-if we are go away for just 1 night the cats are put into a reputable cattery for our own peace of mind. Unfortunately the media are only showing the messages of support not the ones where the truth really lies - BLAME THE PARENTS!!

Ultimately parents are RESPONSIBLE for their children and leaving them unsupervised alone in a hotel room is not responsible. The parents unfortunately created the opportunity for a lot things that could have potentially gone wrong and when they decided to leave them alone, they accepted the fact that they were leaving 3 small children in a very dangerous situation. I can't imagine the horror they are feeling or the tremendous guilt that is eating them up, but they made a very, very poor decision. I don't think a jail sentence could be any worse than the guilt that they are carrying, but they most certainly are guilty of child neglect.
As parents we always have to consider what is "best" for our children. When we have children we make the committment to put them first and though we may not always be perfect parents, choosing to leave 3 toddler aged children alone so that mom and dad can have a night out for dinner does not constitute a legitmate excuse for bad decsion making.
And, yes, you are right -- if it were a single parent or parents of a different class it would be looked upon differently. Immediately the connotation of an unfit parent would come to mind and no one would think twice about blaming the parent or parent for such a bad choice.
My prayers are with Madeline and her safe and quick return.

YES!!! They should be charged. It's horrifying that they left those kids alone and I think they should definitely be charged! If they hadn't made that terrible mistake, Madelaine would be home right now. They deserve punishment. What awful parents! And they have two other kids? What will become of them if left with these idiots? If they would leave then alone in a foreign country, just think what happens when they are home.

I cannot believe everyone saying "they have suffered enough". PLEASE! They are, at the very least, guilty of neglect. So you are saying that when a parent loses a child through neglect, they shouldn't be punished because they've suffered enough? Get real!

For Jackson

Madeline McCann is a little girl who went missing from her hotel room in Portugal after her parents left her and her two younger sibling alone in their room so that they could go out for a meal in peace. There is a lot of conjecture about who is to blame for her dissapearance.

Here are the facts:

Madeline has just turned four.
Her two siblings are younger.
The hotel ran a babysitting service which the parents did not choose to use.
She has been missing now for over a week.

The public are debating why they were left alone.
Why the parents didn't use the babysitting service.
Why they aren't being charged
Why aren't they under suspision
Why they went out for the meal in the first place
The list goes on and on and on............

Now to answer the original questioner everyone is entitiled to their opinion on this so here's mine. There are no excuses and as much as I think they are suffering enough now I do think that they should be charged when they return to the UK. That little girl is suffering more than they can ever imagine because she is not to blame and is not old enough to understand whats happening to her. How dare her parents act like the victims. Madeline is the victim here!

I hope she is returned safe and well!

And what about the other millions of holiday makers who do the same thing every year.....? Yeh let`s round em all up and have a public flogging. Would that make you feel better....? I`ve done a similar thing when i`ve been on holiday so i`ll go first. In fact, you know what ? I`ll take the flogging for the mcanns as well coz they`re suffering enough right now. OK ?

I agree, a single Mum leaving her kids to go to the pub would have been flogged in the streets for leaving 3 kiddies alone, even just for half an hour. They are lucky to still have their other two children. What happened to Maddy was needless and all for the sake of a night out without the kids.

Everyone is saying, OK they made a mistake, leave them alone. a mistake? This is more than just a silly mistake, this idiocy cost them their precious daughter.

As it happened in portugal i doubt it will happen but yes i think they should. At the very least social services should contact them on their return to the uk. All i hope at themoment is that the poor child is found quickly. The rest can wait

Well said. Of course, if a single mother did the same, her children would be taken away deeming her as an unfit mother. All parents should be treated the same whether they are, as in the case of Maddy's parents, doctors or cleaners, rich or poor. I think that they should be certainly penalised in someway to ensure that these events do not happen again.

yes i do think they should be prosecuted. if it was a couple who didnt have such high paid employment they would have been prosecuted now and social services would have removed the other 2 children. i do hope they find madeleine alive and well but if the parents had kept her with them at all times they wouldnt be going through this now

It is not a very good time to be debating this . Perhaps we should wait for some sort of outcome, and hope it will be a good [ or at least not a terribly tragic one]
