I personally do not think there are many positives. Unless the vending machine is stashed with healthy snacks. Kids today are too overweight and having snacks around them all the time does not help. I would ask your school to get switch to healthy options in the vending machine like:
Pretzels, popcorn, 100 calorie snacks, etc. Then the positive would be kids are exposed to healthy options during the school day!

We had them in the hall at my high school. It's good for a quick snack or if you forget your lunch but only have a dollar. These days there are usually healthy options available in vending machine. Also, the rush of people that hit the vending machine at lunch create a little bonding circle like the line at the cafeteria.

Downside? People eating their food in class or leaving wrappers lying around, though students at my school were pretty good about both.

vending machines are a POSITIVE in a school environment. people argue that they are a health issue, but you always have a choice on what types of machines you put in your school. if you choose machines with healthy products then this does not become a problem. vending machines can be a huge source of income for a school- as most vendors contract a percentage of sales to the school itself. in my experience, with providing only the school lunch, i find kids do not eat, which is not good for a growing child. with machines providing healthy alternatives, kids have more variety so they are able to find something they enjoy, and do not skip out on a very important meal.

for the negatives.. there are statistics and references at

if kids stay around after school then they have a snack to eat should they get hungry. some of the vending machines in schools are starting to move towards healthier snacks as well. also some of the money goes towards the schools which the can be used to benefit the kids through programs offered by the school.

Well if the vending machines have healthy food and drinks in them than you will be able to eat healthy snacks when you need them! You would just have to make the right choice over the unhealthy items.

We weren't allowed snacks in school. But there was a soda and juice machine. I'd equate it to offices that have a coffee machine and a water cooler. It's for a break from the day, and you get to have that camaraderie with friends. It's a bit of relaxation during a hectic day.

the positive thing about vending machines is that they feed you when the cafeteria is closed. The negative thing is that they don't feed you healthy food.
