Well, largemouth bass pretty much eat almost any kind of baits. They eat worms, leeches, minnows, you name it, they may eat it.. However, the most productive and consistent bait for bass would be leeches. Worms are the best for trouts. I like to use chicken liver or 3 to 5 inch bullheads for catfish. To have confidence in a bait, you just need to experiment and gain confidence.

I fish for Smallmouth Bass and use the 2" neon green bass pro shops tourney series spintail grubs w/ a 1/16 oz. jighead I don't do much trout fishing but for catfish we just use chicken livers in pantyhose so that the scent escapes but the liver does not. It works very well and I have always been a fan of artificial baits around here (Maryland)

For Great Lakes salmon and trout, I use casting spoons (little cleos, cast masters, etc.). Floating spawn sacks is probably the best bait though, especially during spawning season. Trout are very territorial and it is believed they are trying to move another trouts eggs when they bite onto your rigged spawn sack.

for any catfish, try blood stinkbait, chicken livers, or cut up bluegill. they will all work.
