car. We get lessons off the same instructor who is fantastic - so she's really busy! We usually only get 1 lesson each a week. With a new car sitting in the drive our mum offered to take us out. She's a nice, laid back lady so it sounded like a good idea. Wrong! She's a maniac. I've never seen this side to her before. She's mean and if we get one thing wrong she constantly lectures and shouts til we get it right. She had my sister in tears the other day. We've tried telling her that she is too hard on us but she just says we are not practicing enough and will never learn how to drive with that attitude. What can we do?? I'm running out of excuses not to go out with her in my car! Please help!

Tell her you appreciate her help however you think it is best for all concerned that she doesn't teach you as you value your relationship with her far too much and arguing with her upsets you.

PS you are not alone. My father taught me to drive by leaving me at the bottom of a 1 and1/2 mile steep windy road with a manual car and got so fed up with it stalling he called a taxi, left me there and told me to figure out how to get to the top. I learned that way but we didn't speak for weeks. It's not worth the stress on your relationship.

Oh, honey, I'm sorry, but your letter made me laugh, but only because I know exactly where your mom is coming from. Let me explain- For starters, she doesn't have just one of her kids getting ready to drive, but two, and this is scaring the daylights out of her. She knows that this is another step in your growing up, but it also means that she won't be there to protect you when you're driving. She knows that a car can be a potential deadly weapon, that the accident rate for teen drivers is high, and that even though you may be an excellent, conscientious driver, that there are a lot of people behind the wheels of cars that shouldn't be. Because of these things, it is often not a good idea to depend on one's parents to provide driving instructions- they just cannot be detached. Hopefully you will understand that your mom is still the same nice, laid-back lady she has always been- just not while teaching her babies to drive.

Learning to drive, and whether you get on with your instructor is cruicial to how you will progress. Clearly your mum doesn't have the patience to teach you.
Plus the way your instructor is teaching you will be very different to how your mum teaches you, as he/she is teaching you how to drive to DVLA standard. Your mum being an experienced driver has already developed some driving habbits which may not be the correct way to drive. As you are basically learning how to pass you driving test. Parents don't always make the best teachers when it comes to driving. I passed my test a few months ago, and I'm absolutely fine driving on my own. But the minute my mum, dad or brother get into the car - I fall to pieces! As I feel I'm being judged on my driving skills.
Do you have another family mamber who could take you out driving instead?
But I think honesty is the best policy with this issue, you're gonna have to tell your mum that she is stressing you out to much, to be able to continue driving lessons with her.

tell your mother your driving instructor has told you you cant get lessons from your mum anymore as its getting too confusing getting taught the same thing by two different people and you may pick up bad habits!
