Humans are always so linear in their logic as well as in their time. We tend to be a bit self-important as well, believing that the world could not possibly have existed before we came along. Sorry to burst your bubble but humans are a very very new order of creature in the grand scheme of the Earth. We have been around less than the blink of an eye in geological time, and yet we still have the audacity to believe we are masters of all we survey, due mainly to the fact that we can kill something. The truth of the matter is humans are one of the only creatures on the planet that actually know we can die. So whether or not there was existence, before existence is an exercise in futility as well as the ultimate conceit. Hence the reason for God, just another thing we can defer our insecurities, angers, and lack of understandings too.

And now for an intelligent answer. The universe is an endless cycle of "big bangs", black holes sucking in and spitting out matter. Either this is the way it has always been or it was never like this. Since we know the universe exists we know that this is true.

You mean did existence exist before existence? Or is this another "where did God come from then, chicken and the egg type question?

Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
The Father, Son and Holy Spirit existed BEFORE the world was.

Deep questions. Unfortunately, most of them are nonsensical. This is not that they are bad questions, just logically incoherent. To ask what exists outside of existence makes no sense. Neither does asking what happened before time. These concepts only have meaning within our universe.

God was there, and God stimulated the "big bang" that started it all.
