i'm sure you mean american churches when you say that. hasn't the media called obesity in america an ''epidemic''?

gluttony is a metaphor for greed. basically, if you can't control your apetite, you can't control the ''lust of the flesh,'' which causes you to sin.

I think it's unfair to assume that all churches are full of fat people. That is based on your personal experience and surely may not be representative of the whole.

First off, America and Europe are both seeing future public health crises in the form of obesity and other weight related problems. As the populations as a whole get larger and bigger and fatter it is logical to assume that gatherings of people in those populations will show that.

On the sin of gluttony...the meaning of it is over-indulgence and waste. For those of us who do eat too much and eat when we don't need to, the thinking of making that a sin is that the food and money spent would be better used by giving it to the poor and homeless or organizations that help the destitute.

'Man does not live by bread alone...but by every Word that
proceeds out of the Mouth of the Lord....'

Many factors play a role in people being 'fat'...eating too much
is only one of them.

Gossip and false witness against the neighbor is also
sin. 'One cannot see the fault in his neighbor if there is a
slab in his own eye...and the one among you who is free
of sin, let him cast the first stone....' Should I go on?

Before you begin to characterize what is sin and what is not,
be sure to utilize the principles of the 5th Amendment...don't
incriminate yourself, you don't have to, you know! (And if
you are a military person use Article 32)...there's going
to be enough against you without piling it in on youreself!

There are very few overweight people in my church. Most of the men are military, so they're quite fit. Some of the women are less fit (including myself), but for most of us, it has to do with having children, and/or genetics. For me, it's genetics. The thinnest I'll ever be is a size 12/14, and that's only if I literally starve myself. No thanks. I'd rather eat three meals a day, and be able to eat meat!

As for your second question, yes, Christians are supposed to have everything in moderation, including food. But if their cholesterol, heart, lungs, kidneys, and blood pressure are fine (in other words, if they're healthy), who cares how much they eat, or how overweight they are?

We have a lot of pot luck dinners. I see no emperical evidence to support your position. On Sunday I counted the people who were overweight in the church and percentage wise, it was much less than that of the general population.

There are people of all sizes in Church, just as there are people of all sizes elsewhere.

America does have a battle on its hands with overwieght and fast food, but it is in no way only in the Church.

I don't know what point you are trying to make, but if you look around, you don't have to go to church to see a lot of fat people.
