Higher state of consciousness simply means one becoming more aware of the spiritual consciousness within. As a serious seeker of spirituality... the decrease in dross within the body following the path of absolute truthfulness indicates nearing the ultimate goal of life... the stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana in Hinduism).

Becoming aware of our real self... realizing that the soul atman within our body is the real owner of the body that has manifested the body to work out its karma (remove the dross within)! Realizing that the human body is simply a garment for the soul atman within! After the death of the body... the soul atman within becomes free to manifest another body... a new journey of physical manifest life.

The conscience within every human being is our soul atman that resides within our heart. It is long journey for the soul atman within... a cosmic life cycle of 8.4 million manifestations (and an earthly life of 96.4 million years) before it finally liberates from the cycle of birth and death. The form of a human being is the highest manifest stage in the cosmic life cycle of soul atman within.

Only as a human being shall every soul atman gain final release. Never from heaven or hell does the soul atman go directly to the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism). Only when human being gains enlightenment... does the liberated soul atman enter the portal of kingdom of God... a point of no return!

The consciousness within every human being (nay every living being) is the real essence of life. The moment the complete dross within removes... our soul atman regains its original pure pristine form. More on Spiritual Consciousness - http://www.vijaykumar.com/spiritual_consciousness.html

The difference between conscience and conscious is that your conscience is that internal part of you that acts as your moral awareness of right and wrong. It requires no effort for you to think about a situation --- you intuitively know the morality or immorality of a situation.

On the other hand, your consiousness is that internal part of you that you must use effort to be aware of through prayer and meditation. Using prayer and meditation allows your mind to reach a higher level of understanding of yourself and the universe on a much deeper level. While you are in this higher state of consciousness, your perception of reality of your world and being is deeper and clearer. You might say, it is similar to using an "mind eye" to see with rather than the eyes in your physical body. If you practice focused meditation and prayer daily, the understanding you perceive about life and the universe will stay with you even when you are not meditating. Using that knowledge to interact with others is true wisdom. Wisdom leads you to enlightenment and you can see things and situations with your mind's eye which is much more meaningful.

Excellent question

The basic state of most human beings is

'I am George or Laura'
I want this and that
The day passes, and the life passes in this state of wanting and rejecting, attraction and repulsion, intake and output, disease and death. This is the constantly changing state, life after life. This is the state of, 'I am this body'

Then there is the state of the spirit. This is the state of the Self. This is eternal. It is always there wherever there is life. When it leaves, the body is burnt or buried.

That State is the the state of the Self. That is called Self realization. Rare are the individuals who get a taste of it, or even an experience of it. This state is higher , because it is beyond the mind, speech and the acts of the body. You are indeed That, but you do not know it. By your own efforts you cannot attain that state of 'higher' consciousness. it is not really higher, it is simply Your real nature, but you the worldy self, the ego laden spirit , cannot realise it.
That

It's easy to achieve a higher state of consciousness. All that it requires is a deep heartfelt desire to receive higher guidance, with a pure motive. Conscience is following your inner knowing of what your heart KNOWS is right, such as not stealing from someone even if you have the opportunity to do so.

I believe the two are intertwined, not mutually exclusive. Humanity has SIX senses, and that inner "conscience" we feel is part of our "higher consciousness" - they go hand in hand. AND one cannot elevate their "higher consciousness" while living with any deception. It is purity of heart, motive, word and deed that is a real prerequisite for Higher Consciousness, which does come from following our "conscience."
Great question!

Spiritual consciousness is different from the brain based consciousness (mental awareness).

State of spiritual consciousness can vary from being most conditioned (completely in bondage of ignorance) to being totally unconditioned. (totally liberated in enlightenment) The consciousness in a rock may be close to the most conditioned state and in human beings much less compared to a rock. However human consciousness is still in a much conditioned state compared to what one may call as divine consciousness or God consciousness. Higher state of consciousness in a human being would imply progressing from self-consciousness (individualized consciousness) to universal consciousness or in state of being one with the whole universe.

Conscience is the moral faculty which is part of one's higher nature (much evolved consciousness).

CONSCIENCE
The awareness of a moral or ethical aspect to ones conduct together with the urge to prefer right over wrong. A source of moral or ethical judgment or pronouncement.
Conformity to ones own sense of right conduct.
CONSCIOUS
Having an awareness of ones environment and ones own existence, sensations, and thoughts. Mentally perceptive or alert; awake or aware.

Achieving a Higher state of consciousness means " Having a very high level of spiritual awareness of your believes and faith". That, you are not in doubt about your faith.

So I'll leave you to your own conscience. Good luck.

A higher state of consciousness occurs when you stand back, see religion for what it is and take responsibility for your own life and your own thoughts and actions. I left the rules and dogma behind and learned to see the Divine in all life, to respect and care for it and wherever possible to cause harm to no one, human or animal. I am aware now that all life is energy that cannot be destroyed, only altered in its vibration. God is Pure Energy and we can connect with Her once we realise this. This Energy is only capable of Love and does not condemn me or threaten me with hell.

By going through this process, you will:

Gradually find meaningful personal answers to all of your questions about life.
Gain a new understanding of who you are and why you are here.
Gain a new sense of meaning and purpose.
Attain an understanding that will empower you to solve your personal problems and put your life on a positive track.
Instead of going from one crises to the next, you will go through a series of positive experiences that build upon each other. Instead of spending your life defending your present beliefs, your life becomes a journey of discovery, and you are constantly embracing new ideas that enrich your life. Eventually you will begin to experience the true, inner happiness and peace of mind that all people (even if they are not consciously aware of it) are striving for.

There are seven levels of consciousness in man.
As man climbs these seven levels or rungs on the ladder, man must continuously remain aware that he is helping those on a lower level of consciousness raise there level of consciousness also.
This is the duty of a True Human Being........
