Minimum of 2 yrs. That gives you time to do adequate health screening to ensure you aren't passing along general as well as breed specific health issues.

OFA can't be done until they are 24 months, so I stand beside that age!

If you have to ask, then you aren't ready to breed your dog. You can get them fixed at a very young age. Breeding is not what you think, and you don't want your dog going through it unless you are ready to become a farmer. Breeding is a livestock operation, and you don't want to get involved with it unless you know exactly what you are doing.

A male should be around 2 years of age before their first breeding. This will give you time to determine his temperament and whether he has any diseases and whether he is a good breeding candidate or not. Keep in mind that MOST purebred dogs are not worth breeding, and no mutt is worth breeding. IF your dog is a good breeding candidate (which is highly unlikely) then you won't know until he is around 2 years old.

Better off to get your dog fixed. Read the link. You aren't going to accomplish what you think.

it depends on the breed. if you have smaller breeds then you would like to wait til they are around 1yr, if you have a med-lg breed then you can breed them at the age 7-8 months(that is usually when they drop). if you are looking to paper the pups then you will have to wait til the male is around 7-8 months because the AKC will not reg the pups if the male was under 7-8 months of age, then you will only be able to sell them as pets even though the parents are papered but the male is to young. so wait til the male is 7-8 months or if a smaller breed then wait til he is around 1yr old. you can also get this type of info on the AKC site and they will be able to give you all the info that you will need to do breeding the right way. but be careful because there is a bill out right now and it might make it impossible to breed any more. if you do want to breed you will have to get a permit to do so, but you can voice your opinion on this matter if you deside to breed your dog. i hope this helps and good luck

I agree with with some of the other posters. If you are seriously asking this question, then you shouldn't be breeding your dogs.

2yrs is the minimum that you should even think about breeding at. You should look at your certain breed parent club's requirements for breeding. For the most part, it is at least an OFA x-ray, but many other tests should also be thought about.

Unless he has something to offer to the continuation of positive breed characteristics which are necessary for the maintenance of breed standards, no dog should be used in a breeding program. If your dog is a mutt, or substandard, get him neutered.

After he gets health checked. found another female dog that has been health checked And both of the breeders(owners of male and female) consider the work and money they have to put into it. consider that they might be stuck with 4-12 puppys.
About 1 year is good.

About 6 months of age - some earlier - some later.

Why do you want to breed your dog?

Does he have his show championship?
Do you have years of experience in breeding quality dogs?
Are you associated with other breeders of quality dogs?
Are you financially able to care for puppies until they're at least 12 weeks of age?
Are you willing to screen potential puppy buyers?

And a host of other questions = all of which demand a "yes" answer to.

In fact, if you can't say "yes" to ALL of just those few questions I asked, then don't breed - NEUTER!
