I have a 8 mos old yellow Lab. What is a good food to feed my growing puppy (presently 36 lbs)? We used to give him Purina and he seemed to like it (and the vet says he is healthy), but someone told me Pedigree was better, well I bought some this morning and he wont touch it-how come? he didnt even try it, is it the smell or something? (I mean a bought a huge bag of the stuff-obviously a big mistake) I even hid his treats in the middle in hopes that he would eat it, he just dug past the food and found the treat and ate it, LOL. How can I get him to eat it/will he not eat it?

thank you everyone for the input. I only want the best for my dog, so when someone gives me advice I take it because I feel like I am new to this. I havent had a dog since I was a child-but I am learning my hubby will be leaving (deployment) on the 18th so I want to get this right while he is gone. I love my doggy so much I would never want to hurt him.

You will find that everyone has their own favorite dog food brand/diet, and of course what anyone else is using is all wrong.
What you need to do is find the food that YOUR dog does best on, and don't worry about what other people feed theirs.
The one thing to watch for with Labs is that some will have trouble retaining their weight on a meat based protean (lamb) while others will have to loose a stool on a poultry based protean (chicken). So you may need to switch to find which your Labs does the best on.
To get your dog to at least eat the food that you have, make up a little beef or chicken bouillon to sprinkle on it.

NOOOOO! Do NOT feed your labrador Pedigree! Who told you this stuff was better anyway? It's pretty lousy stuff, and EVERY overweight labrador I know (and I know many) were fed on either Pedigree or Bakers. As a consequence, I despise the stuff. Even so, I very much doubt they spray it with blood(!)
I would agree with your vet that Purina is good stuff. There's no doubt it's better than Pedigree anyway. Since Labradors are the number 1 breed for becoming overweight, PLEASE do not feed him Pedigree.
Plus if your dog already had a food that he liked, and had been recommended by a vet, why change it?
"Pedigree Chum - top breeders recommend it" What the Hell does that say about breeders I'd like to know.

YUCK!!!Pedigree is garbage. Its even sprayed with blood before its packaged, just so the dog will eat it. If price is an issue than IAMS large breed is ok. But if you want him to have the best diet and price not being a big issue than I would suggest Natures recipe large breed puppy till hes a year. Then move on to the large breed adult. You can take that bag back for a full refund and head to PetSmart where you will find 5 aisles of dog food. Nutro, Nutro Ultra, Nutro max, Science Diet ( Lamb and rice only ), Royal Canin, And Blue Buffalo are just some of the excellent foods that i would suggest for him. Please remember that the better food you feed, The less hes gonna eat, The less he will eliminate. So even if your spending a little more, You wont be buying as much as often. Stay away from canned food. Good luck

A dogs food should never be changed suddenly, it can lead to diarrhea. Mix a bit of the new food in with the old, and see if that helps. Switchiing to a new food should be done slowly.
Or, it could be he just doesnt like the new food. Purina and Pedigree are pretty comprable foods anyway. I feed my dogs Science Diet and they love it.

i have a 7 month old female, 45 lbs we have fed her ol roy since the day we got her. if you look at most brands, you are just paying for a name. look at the ingredients and you will find the same things in the same amounts in the cheaper foods. if you change a dogs diet suddenly it will upset there stomach guaranteed. if you want to switch, do it slowly adding a lil more new and a little less old over a 2 week period.

Dogs sometime react that way when you all of a sudden change their food, you can try mixing it with the food that he is used to. Or add a small amount of wet food to it.
