I am new to the area..Have caught peacocks (a lot of fun) various cichlids, tilapia etc....Some Largemouth, very few bluegill...no crappie...It seems to me that SE Florida is over run by exotic species..

Haha! Welcome to Florida, it seems sometimes that all we have are invasive exotic species. Heck, those brown lizards all over the place aren't even native.

They're around, keep trying. Ask around at your bait stores and such, they should be able to point you in the right direction.
