Depends on where you are flying from. As far as hotels, there are all kinds in SD. I recommend you stay in the Point Loma area. It is close to the airport and the Marine Base. It also has 2 to 5 star hotels. Almost all have great views of the bay. Many of the hotels have free shuttles to Marine graduations.

When planning any trip I go to at least three different travel sites to research prices and compare. Prices on hotels and airfare fluctuate a great deal. It depends on time of year, locations you are flying into and out of, industry trends (gas prices, employee strikes, etc.).

I suggest you visit a couple of sights and put in some dates to see what kind of prices you get back. That will give you a ballpark figure to budget with.

I often use:

www.orbitz.com
www.travelocity.com
www.cheaptickets.com
www.expedia.com

Tips for keeping fares lower:
It seems prices are lower if you can fly weekend to weekend instead of during the week.

Try to fly in and out of major airports instead of smaller satellite airports.

Some sites offer discount packages if you book airfare and hotel at the same time.

Check with your sisters and brother and see if any of you have credit cards with airfare reward programs.

Good luck and travel safe!

too many variables. when does he graduate? are there any events going in on SD that weekend that would make it tougher to get a hotel or a flight? where are you coming from?

SATO isn't always the best deal, and in fact in many cases it isn't.
