I don't think it's images = it's more likely the wrong software has become 'linked' to the images

When you install new software it can 'take over' file 'associations' that they should not.

For example 'JPG' files may have become associated with a games program that does not understand JPG

To change the file associations ..

'Right Click' on an image.

Select 'Open With' > 'Choose Program'

In the 'Open With' menu window, highlight the Viewer/Edit software you want to use (for example, Adobe Photo-shop) and set the option 'Always use the selected program to open this type of file'.

If you can't see your program (Photo-shop or whatever) in the window, click on the 'Browse' button and go look for it in the Program Files (or where-ever) folder

Go into Folder Options via Control Panel and see which program opens specific file types e.g. .jpg and change the program that opens those file type. Windows has a built-in program called Windows Picture and Fax Viewer which should be able to open most images.
