I have constant sharp pain in the upper abdominal area that occurs randomly throughout the day. It so painful sometimes that I have to lie down, but it only last for a few seconds, and is often times followed by another and another. I do not see any relation to food except that it causes me to lose my appetite, or eat a little and feel full. I am very skinny (94-98 lbs, 5'5), and all my friends and family always ask if I have an eating disorder. I do not!!!!! I just can't explain my gradual loss of weight over this two-thee yr period. The pain continues today, and doctors have prescribed antacids but they are beginning to not work anymore. My appetite is being suppressed again and the pain came back. In addition to this, I have loss my period for over two years. I had menstruated at least two times before it stopped. My doctor says that this is normal, but I don't agree. I want an explanation for this pain and my cycle stopping and she treats me like a 10yr old with a tummy ache. Help

Well, I am not too sure about the abdominal pain. Abdominal pains can be very difficult to diagnose without a full work up including labs (blood work) and ultrasounds/CT scans of your abdomen. You may also eventually need endoscopy (camera down your throat to look into your stomach) and see if there is an area of ulcer, etc. as this could certainly be the cause of it.
I can explain the period situation. At 5'5 and ~95 pounds your body fat percentage is likely too low to support a menstrual cycle. This _is_ considered normal for your current height and weight. Your BMI would be 15.8, with the low end of normal being closer to 20 at your height. Fatty tissue is an estrogen producing tissue. You need estrogen to have a menstrual cycle. Some accounts say that a young girl needs 100# of body weight before her menstrual cycle is able to regulate...but even this can be skewed if the 100# is on an even taller woman. You need to pack on the pounds, girl! At least 10-15 pounds in the short term. If you aren't hungry OR if you are the kind of person who eats everything on this earth and still doesn't gain weight - you might have to grab some high calorie drinks or protein bars to supplement your diet. Some taste gross - but if you can experiment a bit and find one you like, you can add weight and your menstrual cycle should return!
Hope this helps!

If your periods have stopped and this does stop in seriously underweight females. You actually should weigh 120 to 130 at five foot five inches tall.
The steady weight loss (you didn't mention what you weighed before the loss started), the stopping of the periods. Tells me that something is wrong.
For the stomach distress, try a couple tablespoons of lemon juice in a glass or bottle of water once a day, every day. I have gotten rid of acid reflux this way. When the acid gets out of balance in our stomachs it causes the pain. The lemon juice corrects the acid levels. I also lose weight with stomach problems.
Give it a try, if your stomach aches stop, you will feel like eating and your weight will climb closer to normal. Then your periods will probably start again.
Taking a Multiple vitamin every day would probably help your health also.
Good Luck.

Hello !!! I know exactly what youare talking about!! I have the same thing execpt i gain wait!! I have little or no menstral cycles as well. And I have abdominal pains too!!
In 2006 i was diagnosed with PCOS, Polycystic Ovary Disease. I have had the same symtoms as you. And so have many of the other women I know who have it.. THe sad thing is that many doctors dont diagnos the problem as PCOS until you are in your 20's and it is too late.
Please take a a look at this site..
http://www.pcosupport.org/
And this one too

PCOS is also known as Insulim Resistance, because what happens is that your ovearies become resistant to insilin and they stop producing eggs, hence no menstral cycle. Please read those sites and go to your doctor. Just a heads up, I'm about to turn 19, and already my doctors ahve siad that the longer i wait the harder it will e to have kids. Women with PCOS have a hard time concieving in most cases. I hope you find what youre looking for. Contact me any time !!

I haven't had a period in 3 years. I've been diagnosed with PCOS (polysistic overian syndrome). I'm 24 and was just diagnosed with it about 1year ago. I've had this problem with my period since I was 12 years old. The only way I am able to menstruate is through Provera or birth control. PCOS is associated with insuline resistance.
Because your only 17, and you're still "growing," doctor's don't like to give this diagnosis. Have the doctor check your insulin levels and you might consider trying birth control to regulate your period, or Provera (a medicine you take for ten days every 3-4 months to induce a period). I've recently learned that when you don't menstruate, your uterine lining doesn't shed. Left like this for tooooooo many years, this can turn into uterine cancer. Don't give up!

It could be IBS, PCOS, or Celiac Disease (People with CD are often misdiagnosed first with IBS or PCOS). Eitehr way you need another doc. See your gyn, a regular doc, whatever. You need to probably have an ultrasound and get blood testedf or Celiac Disease. Please see the links below for more info on testing.
CD is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to not process gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It is often misdiagnosed as other things like IBS, PCOS or Crohn's. And it is extremely underdiagnosed even though 1 in 133 ppl have it.
The treatment is a gluten free diet. Very simple.
Best of luck, Amy

See another doctor! There are tests that need to be done to determine why you are having these symptoms and if your current doctor has not done them, you should change doctors. Even if all the tests come back negative, only in those circumstances should the problem be termed "psychogenic" or coming from you head, and if so, you should be referred to a therapist. There is no reason why you should continue to suffer without help, whatever kind of help it is you need.

Seek out another doctor! It NEVER hurts to get a second or even third opinion! It may be gallbladder or restricted bile duct. Go see gastrointologist soon! My daughter had your symptoms at 14 and had to have hers removed. Good luck.
