Yes.
You will never hear this from any Mormon, but part of the conditions for Utah becoming a state in 1896 was that they drop the polygamy thing. It conflicted with the secular laws of the United States. From what I've heard, some still clandestinely practice it though. It was an original teaching of Joseph Smith.

I am a non-mormon who went to middle and high school in a small Utah town. I took Utah History.
Utah wanted statehood, they wanted to be protected by the US governement. The first time they petitioned for statehood, they were rejected because of many thing, but polygamy was the greatest problem as seen by the US government.
Then came the 'revelation' to end polygamy and they petitioned again for statehood and received it.
Polygamy is still believed to be right by God, but God allowed them to not practice this belief in order to keep from being destroyed.

This another curious thing about god - he doesn't always get it right, although he's been distinguished as all-knowing, and talks directly to his prophets in Salt Lake.
He horsed up big time with the Mark Hoffmann forgeries, too.
There's a spin on this, but I'm not aware of what it is except that god throws a curve sometimes to 'test your faith'...
To be accurate, the Fundamentalist LDS church 'sticks' to the traditions of the early church: polygamy, racism and the concept of women as cattle.

Polygamy only came about in the Mormon religion to help propagate the congregation.......Once the elders felt that the number was sufficient then they repealed the acceptance of polygamy......The only reason I know this I happened to as a Mormon about it once.....someone that was interested in the origins of the Mormon faith.....

God "revealed" that polygamy should end, they did not stop polygamy because of the pressure from others.....
They have banned polygamy people do your research. If anyone in the LDS church practices polygamy they will be excommunicated. LDS not FLDS, the FLDS do not call themselves Mormons!
