It really depends on what you mean by downfall. If you mean extinction, that is a pretty hard one to predict. Some cataclysmic natural event will probably be needed, like a giant metor impact.
If you mean downfall of what we commonly refer to as American style civilzation, then we will probably reach some type of equilibrium through population growth and enviromental degradation. At the equilibrium, most people will live in squalid conditions (otherwise there would be more population growth), while a very few will control the remaining natural resources and live relatively well. Technological advances will delay this future and perhaps improve life temporarily until population growth becomes overwhelming. Bummer, isn't it.

The human race could fail simply from being successful. Like lemmings or rabbits, we raise lots of children, because of the the climate is right & there is a plentiful supply of food & water.
We used to be a 'quality' animal - with our big brains & our curiosity & invention. Now we are a 'quantity' animal, wasteful & extravagant. We have covered the planet like a rash - food & water will run out but nobody is prepared to sacrifice our manner of living to bequeath a decent planet to our children. The rainforests are slashed & burned for immediate profit - we travel by air using the depleting supplies of fossil fuels & have lots & lots of babies because we think it's a human right. What about their rights? And their children's rights - when all the decent food is gone & the water dried up? We have this big brain - why can't we work it out?

Ultimately selfishness & greed.
Why selfishness & greed..
Selfishness & greed will lead to
global warming,
nuclear attacks,
the rich erasing the poor,
squandering our wealth,
or not sharing it with the poor,
etc...
.
In the end one way or another we're all going to die because we were too selfish & greedy to do anything but think of ourselves, not helping our fellow man, or cleaning up our acts as far as the environment is concerned, wanting what our neighbors have in other countries.
On the funny side, we may even kill ourselves with too much plastic surgery - hence selfishness & greed.

I think the root cause will be stupidity and/or greed.
People often do not think about concequences of their actions.
People do the strangest things for money.
So, for money, people will not think, but just act.
And that, effectively, will end "the human race" without any winners.

I agree with you in essence. I believe we are destroying our own habitat. Whether it is warming itself or not, we are ruining our world, which is all we have. Read Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD for a take on this.
