What is the best way to travel from Brisbane to Sydney?

Fly Jetstar or Virgin is the quickest and can be as cheap as a coach and more comfortable. If you want to see a some of the scenery then hiring a car and driving the coast road / highway is good but you will need to hire a car for three days so you will not incur a relocation fee. This will give you time to stop at three nice places for the evening. Might I suggest Byron Bay area, Port Macquarie and Newcastle. This will then leave an easy drive into Sydney. You can't get lost.

It depends entirely on whether you want to get from Brisbane to Sydney quickly or enjoy the scenery on the way. For speed, fly. Check out Jetstar and Qantas on the web (I don't recommend Virgin Blue to anyone) for the best price. If you are flexible with dates and times you can get some very good prices.

The train leaves Brisbane around 8am and gets into Sydney at 10pm. There is a night train but don't even think about it unless you get a sleeper. I went on the train a couple of weeks ago and it was a pleasant experience in first class which has plenty of leg room. Take a couple of books along.

If you like buses, there are buses and they are relatively cheap. I am tall and buses are a torture chamber for me but if you are shorter, the trip can be enjoyable.

There are three main road routes with lots of small variations. You can go straight down the Pacific Highway which is an excellent road. Leave early and take your time. It is 1000km. Don't do it at night, the trucks will terrify you.

You can head west from Brisbane along the New England Highway which takes you through Stanthorpe, Armidale, Tamworth and down the Hunter Valley. This is slightly longer than the Pacific Highway with mountain scenery.

The most scenic route and shorter than the New England is the Mt Lindsay Highway southwest from Brisbane through Beaudesert and Woodenbong to Tabulam. Turn right on the Bruxner Highway to Tenterfield and turn left onto the New England Highway. At Uralla, south of Armidale, turn left to Walcha, Gloucester, Stroud and Raymond Terrace. This is a very pretty road with little traffic. You can, of course, make your own route using any of the roads depending on what you want to see. Down the Pacific to Byron Bay then west through Lismore to Tenterfield and the New England would be another lovely way to go. It's up to you.

Hop on a Virgin airways flight and you can get there in one hour and very cheaply. If you want to see the countryside then take a train or bus, but I wouldn't recommend it as it is a 12 hour minimum journey. Some grey nomads enjoy hiring a campervan and taking their time between cities. There is plenty to do on the way.

what do you mean by "best"?

I fly between the two cities quite a few times. It is the quickest and is quite cheap.

But driving is very scenic although it will take you a couple of days (with stops and rest and a good look at various beautiful sightseeing places)

If you don't want to drive - there is alway the train.

If your game you could hitch. i hitched cairns to Brisbane in two days then Brisbane to Sydney in one... it all depends on your luck.
can bee real scary and full of danger, you jus gotta hav ya wits about ya and some sorta weapon is also a must have for long hitch's.

the best way would depend on whether you prefer to stop overnight, costs, scenery, duration.
by car would be ideal - especially along the coast.
by train even better - just sit back and relax and enjoy the ride
by coach/bus - pretty boring - jam packed with people you dont know and not enough room to move
by plane - quick and easy but not much to look at
I would prefer either car or train - either way you get to experience what we have to offer with beautiful views of our coast - with the train you can relax with the car you would put more of your focus on the traffic on the way down.

if you want to get there quickly go by plane otherwise its a nice drive if you have a car. Whatever you do dont take the bus - its a nightmare
