Alexander was a great leader and was undefeated. Napoleon did have a lot of subordinates, but he also defeated much larger armies than Alexander. It is a very tough question and one can make logical arguments for both men. Personally, I am a proponent of Napoleon. He split is army into semi-autonomous groups, led by men he chose based on merit not birth and was a master at using the terrain to his advantage (see Austerlitz). There are also a lot of other choices to consider (though I agree with you that these are the top 2). Genghis Khan, Gustavus Adolphus, and Frederick the Great also deserve some degree of recognition.

The man had a lot to be afraid of. I suggest you read his history. The man had stomach ailments and physical ailments that I am sure must have scared him a bit, people by his side that were harsh to him, his wife cheated on him, afraid of being captured or worse yet killed, and the list goes on. Read up. Unless they know for sure that he came out and said he was scared of something it is only speculation.

Afraid of his troops wearing white after Labor Day. All kidding aside, I think I read somewhere that when Napoleon was in Egypt, he saw something really disturbing when he was visiting one of the great pyramids. It was said that while inside, he saw his defeat at Waterloo and the end of his life.
