I am going to propose to my girlfriend. I know what wedding ring she's wanted forever, but I have no idea what to look for in an engagement ring. I want to propose on my knee with the little box...the whole 9, but I don't want to pick something she really won't like.

Honestly, I have a feeling she'll like whatever you'll choose.

When my husband was in the market for rings...I was trying to give him pointers, lol. He got all angry with me and was like 'i can pick it out just fine by myself'...

I specifically told him what I DID NOT want.....and...well....him being him.....he bought JUST that, LOL.

However, his 'presentation' of giving it to me was just so cute, and so perfect......I LOVE the ring!! Everytime I look at it, it's a reminder of that night. And it's just perfect!!!

If she loves you, and I'm assuming she does....it's really not that big of a deal what the ring looks like.

But, if you know the wedding ring she likes...then just try to find something that matches.

Since she's going to have to wear this thing every day forever... let her pick it out! The grand gesture is all very well, but if she really doesn't like it she'll probably not want to say so in order to not hurt your feelings.

Unless the wedding band she loves has a matching engagement ring, I'd either propose without the ring, or do what one person said.. get a toy ring as a symbol, and then go shopping together. That's great fun, and a ritual most women love :)

Is it possible that the wedding ring she wants has a matching engagment ring? You can go to the store where the ring is and tell them your delimna and ask them if they have any matching rings for it. If they dont then you want to pick something that is similar to the wedding band. You could always take her to the mall and then when you get near one of the jewelry stores tell her you want to look at the men's watches. Look at them first and then make your way around to the engagement rings and then find one and just say "wow thats a pretty ring" and wait for her response. Continue looking at them until she picks one she thinks is pretty. Then just leave the store and make some kind of statement that you didnt find the watch you were looking for so you'll look somewhere else.

I had a friend whose boyfriend proposed to her with a little blue plastic cracker-jack-box ring. She said yes, and they went together to pick out the real engagement ring. She still keeps the little plastic blue ring in her jewelry box, and it's a sweet memory of his proposal and has a lot of sentimental value.

Other than that, enlist the help of her best friend, or her mother, or someone who would know her taste or maybe even close to exactly what she would want. See if they can get her around the jeweler and looking at engagement rings in a "what if" kind of situation. You could get lucky enough that she'd pick one out. If not, I would bet her best friend or mom would know what she would really like.

Yes....by all means choose the ring yourself. That is so very, very romantic....I think it is beautiful when the man chooses the ring and suprises his love.
If you know the wedding ring she wants, I would go to that jewellery shop and get it. Then take it with you and find the perfect engagement ring that complements it. Ask the jewellers, especially female ones for their advice on what looks good, as they are qualified to do just that.
Good luck and congratulations. There should be more like you out there!

Why don't you invite her best friend to look at rings with you? My best friend knows exactly what I want and could easily help my bf find something I'd love. My brother found the engagement ring for his gf by doing this as well. Her friend just showed him the style that she likes and he picked on that she really loves.

Good luck!

If you're going for "the surprise", it doesn't matter what kind of engagement ring you get. Tell her it's only a stand-in ring and then after you pop the question, go shopping for the real ring afterwards. Most girls want to be involved with the ring shopping. Her idea of an awesome ring will not necessarily be yours.

That is so romantic!
Take a pic of the wedding ring to a reputable jeweler who can advise you of something that will match.

My husband actually bought me a diamond and I chose the setting. It was romantic still just having the stone, but if you want to do the whole ring thing you might even like to get along side her family and you know...get them to help you a bit...

Good luck! When do you plan on proposing?

OK Jim here's the deal. Girls usually know what they want. I know I did and I picked out my own rings. However, I didn't get the kind of proposal you are planning. Take Steve's advice and bring a ring you think she might love, but let her know it can be exchanged for another if she is not happy with this one. Believe me, you want a happy woman. Congrats and good luck.

I'd check out a few websites first such as bluenile.com or Tiffany.com. You'll see engagements that you think your to-be-fiance would love.
You can always go to a regular jewelry store and picking up a nice 1 or 2 carot solitare ring (Tiffany style), but I think any gal would love an engagement ring from Tiffany's. Go to their website and find a store near your area. I'm sure your to-be-fiance would be estatic.
